“the People.” As in “The People think/want/say X,” or “My candidate speaks for the People.” As if such a unified entity exists. It generally means, “this is what my candidate’s supporters are for” or “my candidate reflects my views.”

America is a vast and varied nation, with a plethora of beliefs and stances. Even polls that claim to represent majority/minority opinions on issues cannot capture the hodgepodge of individual understandings. And they certainly don’t capture the fact that for many Americans, opinions on issues have nothing to do with their ultimate political preferences.
