The convictions relating to the Obama senate seat were tossed out by 7th circuit court of appeals. When Judge Zagel sentenced Blago to 14 years he relied heavily on those convictions. During re-sentencing Zagel refused to reduce the sentence. That is the main reason most attorneys felt the sentence was severe with no rational reason. Senator Durbin in 2018 said Blago should be released then because the sentence was far too long.

He has a decent family and isn’t a known rapist or philanderer. Some of the charges against him were politically motivated and the sentence was excessive in relation to the actual “crime”.

The “lock them up” mentality is barbaric—people seem to just want people to stay in jail literally forever. The concept of punishment fitting crime is lost.
