"Everything will be done to investigate the circumstances of these terrible murders," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has condemned the deadly shootings in the German city of Hanau on Wednesday night and said they exposed the “poison” of racism in German society.

Speaking in Berlin Thursday morning, hours after a gunman killed 10 people in separate attacks outside hookah lounges and at a residence in the city before fatally shooting himself, Merkel confirmed that early indications suggested it was a racist, far-right attack.

"There are many indications at the moment that the perpetrator acted on right-wing extremist, racist motives, out of hatred towards people of other origins, religion or appearance," she said.

"Racism is poison, hatred is poison and this poison exists in society and it is to blame for too many crimes."

According to DPA, a few days before the crime the suspected perpetrator had posted a disturbing video on YouTube that included conspiracy theories.

In the video, he speaks fluent English and discusses a "personal message to all Americans".

The clip, which could be seen on the Internet on Thursday morning but was later taken down, was apparently shot in a private apartment and was posted online a few days ago.

In it, the man says that there are underground military facilities in the USA where children are abused and killed.

American citizens should wake up and fight against these conditions "now", he said. A reference to an imminent own act of violence in Germany is not included in the video.

If you haven't been paying attention to the rise of far-right groups in Europe, now would be the time to start.

Germany has one of the strictest bans on weapons. The only demographic allowed access to guns, weapons, etc. are military, police, and Jaegers (huntsmen). Ordinary citizens can't buy them in Germany like here.

I have a few friends in Germany and the Netherlands that hunt. They don't keep their guns at home, but instead at a gun club or one of the hunting clubs they belong too. I've been in Europe a few times during mass shootings in the US and people are generally floored at the idea that any yahoo can go buy a gun.

The shooter was named by police as 43-year-old Tobias R. His surname was not given. The perpetrator shot himself and his 72-year-old mother at home, police said. They also confirmed that he possessed a hunting licence.

Not that uncommon:

In 2010 there were about four million legal private gun owners.
