General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am simply amazed at how people continually post the wrong subject matter in this forum
I did it once, albeit by mistake.
I've tried to be very careful since.
Yet I see the same people doing it over and over again.
What's up with that?

(46,318 posts)When I posted about George Zimmermann's latest lawsuit, I figured since he's suing a couple candidates, it should be in the primaries forum.

(24,221 posts)For those of us that have had a 'showbiz" or other type post shut down or removed and then see others left up is disheartening and makes one question the fairness with which some rules are enforced here.

The "punishment" should be complete removal - since the goal seems to be to get the contnt of the OP into GD. When the post is merely locked, the content remains.
Completely agree with you.

(73,536 posts)I wasn't thinking, and posted in the wrong forum. How did that happen? Just not paying attention. At first I thought, "You idiot! How could you do that?" But then I laughed, and recognized it as the type of error that I make more frequently these days -- though usually not publicly!
I hope all is well with you. And let's kick the shit out of the Trump administration!

(54,349 posts)I do not qualify for posting in the primaries forum, but occasionally have something to say that may touch on one of the people running for our presidential nomination, but not the race specifically.
I find it ridiculous that every time something happens that may involve one of said candidates, it MUST be posted in the Primaries forum or else not at all, as they no longer exist outside of the race (apparently). Besides the fact that the Primaries board has predictably become one ugly, nasty board, sometimes events are worthy of mention that do not involve the presidential race, but DO concern people running in it. These candidates do not get quarantined until the nomination is decided. They do other stuff outside of their presidential campaigns (except here, apparently).
Besides, the Primaries board has people who never post about ANYTHING about ANYTHING else on all of DU except what their candidate is up to, or how they possess papal infallibility. One even admitted flat out that they were working staff on one of the campaigns. THAT is OK for a discussion board? Sounds more like an extension brawl of the debates to me. "No discussion wanted, thank you very much, just adoration of my boss or dishing out derision for your lack of it." I, for one, am not in the slightest amazed that some of us prefer to avoid threads with that as a premise, and like to have discussions with cooler heads.
Again, I realize that is a minority opinion, and I'll take my lumps for expressing it.

(12,377 posts)GD has become quite bland because of the reasons you just stated. And the primary board is just a bar room brawl.
DFW
(54,349 posts)When at least one campaign has a declared staff member posting nothing else on DU but what their candidate is up to and how wonderful they are, all pretense of a discussion board goes out the window. I have seen this in 2008 and 2016 as well (I heard 2004 was similar, but I wasn't here then--just as well: a friend of mine was a candidate that year!). People magically materialize on DU to promote a candidate or just to make trouble, and then vanish in the haze once the primary is decided. I guess we should be flattered that we are considered important enough to merit the attention. Usually, though, it just creates bad blood. I'm frankly surprised that the owners of DU are still cool with it. But, like in ancient Rome, when the emperor went to the coliseum to watch gladiators slaughter themselves, people were not under any obligation to attend, and they could leave any time. The same goes for the Primaries board. I do look, but do not stick around to watch the blood thicken the sand of the arena.
By the way, the Russian trolls are usually easy to spot because of their imperfect English. I know some Russian, and thus know what grammatical errors to look for. Russian does not have articles (a, the), and native speakers of Russian are often unsure where to put them, or when to leave them out. Another thing to remember is that Russian has no present tense of the verb "to be," so they often leave out "is" or "are." Also, Russian is declined, so Russian speakers often leave out words like "of." Where an English speaker would say "Chicago is a city full of busy people, a Russian not completely fluent in English might say, "Chicago city full busy people."

(54,349 posts)I suppose I certainly have had enough occasions to have been justified if I did.
I figure if someone is acting horribly enough to me or anyone else, I ask (comes from being married to a social worker), "what the hell makes this person be so nasty that they feel inspired to post crap like that?"
I figure they are some kind of lonely, mistreated, introverted, insecure, immature, shy, full of aggression they somehow never get a chance to work out/off, though they feel a very desperate need to. Some combination of the above. Very unhappy people, anyway. I see this kind of person posting right wing crap a LOT, but Democrats are not immune to having miserable private lives. Some people just don't get a break. It's not their fault.
So, I figure if someone is posting angry stuff that I would ignore, they are hurting worse than I ever will for reading their angry tirades. So, while I make a comment or two, especially if they are going after people I know and care for, I figure anyone making a comment evil enough to warrant being ignored is probably some unfortunate soul being ignored by life going on around them, and passing them by. And, besides that--even though their posting may indicate a rigid one-track mind, every now and then one of them might post something interesting! You never know, right? So, I just ignore posts, not people. I can't make them more pleasant, but nothing says it can't happen all on its own.
We all have our trials to live through. I know I sure have. But, you remember the old phrase, "there, but for the grace of God, go I?" I just look at angry posts from the "ignorables (sorry, Hillary, I couldn't resist)," and think "DAMN, am I glad there's nothing so awful going on with me that I feel like posting something like that!"

(34,062 posts)The thread becomes a magnet for the same brawls that are an every thread occurrence In the primary forum.
In theory, I agree with you. But as it actually plays out here, not so much. Since I'm called to Judy duty three times a day or more, always in primaries, I have no interest in spreading that toxin around the board.
That said, I don't generally alert on threads that clearly are about something other than the primaries, unless the context suggests it was posted in an attempt to get around the forum restriction. (I do alert on threads about the primaries, since I'd rather not wade into that toxin in GD.)
DFW
(54,349 posts)But just this morning, there is a post about the inevitability of one candidate in GD. No one seems to mind, and if THAT isn't primaries-related and getting around the forum restriction, I don't know what is. So either the rule isn't as ironclad as it is reputed to be, or someone is asleep at the wheel, and with all the forum police, the latter seems unlikely. I didn't see any toxin on that thread so far, but the day is yet young.
I don't alert on threads, either--about anything. I did that exactly once, about ten years ago, when an obvious right wing troll came for a brief visit. I was told to fuck off and grow a thicker skin. The troll was kicked off within hours after that (apparently there are others here with equally thin skins), but I learned my lesson. No alerting, no juries, no thanks.
I went back and looked, and saw that the thread I mentioned was indeed locked--two hours after I left a one line reply.
I didn't get back to checking until now, as I had to run down to Spain very early this morning, and just got back (plane
was on time for once---will wonders never cease? The midday train from Madrid to Barcelona was not, of course--can't
have EVERYTHING, can you?).
Still, I didn't alert on it, since, as I said, I don't alert on anything. Whatever the cause was, it came from elsewhere.

(46,700 posts)I have the answer. Actually, two reasons. First, I don't usually post in that group, until recently, so I keep making the same mistake. Second, the mistake is a simple one. I select "Democratic Primaries" and just assume I am directly on the page I need to post. The part of hitting "General Discussion" and overlooking all the warning signs is just following habit.

(32,017 posts)I suspect this thread belongs in "Ask the Administrators."
Don't post messages about site rules, enforcement, juries, hosts, administration, alerts, alerters, removed posts, appeals, locked threads, or anything else related to how this website is moderated (except in the Ask the Administrators forum).
Why we have this rule: The purpose of Democratic Underground is to discuss politics, issues, and current events. Open discussion of how the website is run tends to distract from our core purpose.

My own post, here, appears to be a violation of this rule. Just sayin'.

(32,685 posts)I did it once by accident--could have sworn I clicked the primaries button. Maybe I clicked too soon before the page fully was loaded and the button and links weren't properly positioned on the screen. Or maybe my brain glitched in the moment.
Either way, like you, I have been even more careful ever since.
Also, there are grey areas where it's not clear if the topic belongs in GD or GDP.
