General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am an 80-year-old disabled widow.
I need a walker to get around and am mostly housebound. I live on social security and during the winter months there is not enough money to make it through each month. My electricity will be turned off on the 25th of this month and I am almost out of propane. I have tried to set up a payment plan with the electric company but it is all or nothing with them. Propane companies want money up front before they will deliver. I have tried to get help from various state agencies, but my social security check is $75 over the limit for help and no state agency will help me. My lease is up the end of April and I will be moving to a place for less rent that also includes utilities. I cant wait.
I have set up a gofundme account:

If you have any pennies to spare I would be ever so grateful.

I do not wish to be hard-hearted, but there seems to be a pattern here. Whether its deliberate or youre confused, I cannot know. Regardless, this is a repeating problem that needs to be addressed beyond asking for money on DU, Facebook and crowdfunding sources. Do you have any family or friends who could help you straighten things out?

I am 78 years old and disabled. Most of the year I can handle living on my social security but the winter months are terribly difficult with the extra cost of heating. I am behind now on my electric bill and the company is threatening to turn off my electric power in a few days.. My propane tank is almost empty and it s very cold in New Mexico this time of the year through March. I am in desperate need of help. Your help would enable me to be able to cook my meals and keep me warm.

(22,976 posts)Its there that the multiple GoFundMe accounts are broached. I am NOT trying to be cruel. Im worried about this woman. She clearly needs professional help beyond monetary assistance.
Heres another GoFundMe from last December, on behalf of her caretaker.

There are also multiple ages stated; I will not reveal that personal information myself, however, beyond what she self-reports.

(55,026 posts)in the winter. if this is a scam it is pretty small scale. always in the winter, for smallish amounts. if you read the related threads from 2017 (here is another - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10181020962) you can find an accounting of maybe a couple thousand dollars over many years. there is some extraneous shit included in your detective work. but a couple pertinent things are missing. the self deleted poster in the first thread has been banned, or at least PPRd long term.
the hidden OP in the second thread was written by me, here is what it said -
earlier today DUer chillfactor posted a request for help and a link to a gofundme page and it got hidden. in the Lounge, of all places. I don't know her and she has asked for help a couple of times before, but I donated a little and feel the request is legit. some may feel otherwise and the detectives can do more diligence than I felt I needed to...on the other hand if it isn't a hardship on you, maybe kick in a little. a lot of people are suffering, and it is more than likely to get much worse before improving. in the spirit of the season and all that.
thanks
I am 76 years old, alone, and disabled. I have 39 cents in my account. I am almost out of propane, I am going to loose my internet and TV unless I can pay the bills. The TV and internet are my connections to the outside world as I am very isolated where I live and I have no vehicle. I have already lost my phone service. I also need groceries. It will be a very poor Christmas in this house. I would be very grateful for any help I can get, https://www.gofundme.com/apv875-help
