(13,485 posts)1561 new cases total
1316 in China
121 deaths
1 day
daily rise from 400 to 900 to 1550+
What was reported in the early stages is not relevant to the present because there was little data and no indication of contamination. Now there's more data and the recent numbers (2 weeks or less) has relavance to the way the disease is affecting people. New cases are rising now in a longer term curve but still rising. In another week or two we might know more.

(2,218 posts)has several forums discussing this in detail, including Google translations from Chinese sites which are amazingly readable.
This is pretty lengthy but it is a frightening point to think about. People are not getting betterr very quickly and the hospital beds are filling up.
Google Translation:
"But you will find that the most serious problem is that the number of people recovering has been very small, only a few thousand people have accumulated, but it has been more than 4 weeks, and the number of people in the continuous treatment of intermediate illness is still more than 50,000. We and I don't know how long this time will be delayed. "
These people may need a respirator or even Ye Kemian. Regardless of the respirator, the number of patients alone is so large. It is conceivable that even beds are not enough. How can they be treated carefully? "If the number of cases in Taipei suddenly increases due to a community infection, it will paralyze the entire city like Wuhan," Zhang said. "It is difficult for us to imagine the urgent situation in Wuhan now."
Professor Zhang Nanxuan emphasized that the most serious thing in the course of the disease is that the patients are stuck in the "ill" state. Except that the patients themselves are very distressed, the manpower and medical expenses required are huge. Just as Wuhan has now built two hospitals and even dispatched troops, the factories have stopped working. "The most difficult thing to solve is" panic ". The sick panic and the caregivers panic. The panic makes everyone rush to grab supplies and masks."
...
Next Zhang Nanzheng analyzed the possible normal distribution of the course of the flu. The total number of illnesses in the flu is high. Although the mortality rate is low, it still kills a lot of lives. In just two weeks, almost all people who are sick in the middle will move to the right and become fully recovered.
...
"The reason why we don't feel anything is because the disease is coming and going fast on the individual. After just 2 weeks, the patient will recover to health and return to work. The curve of the number of people who are cured will move to the right instead of stagnation like Wuhan pneumonia Don't move forward, "Zhang Nanxun pointed out.
He said with emotion, although it was said to stabilize the people and avoid panic, doctors can't claim that Wuhan pneumonia is similar to the flu. The severity is extraordinary. "
Zhang Nanxun said that it is not yet known whether the disease can be completely cured in the future. If the epidemic is prolonged, the death toll will continue to rise and the consequences will be serious. In addition, a coronavirus infection will have permanent damage to the body. As long as the lungs are inflamed, they will leave traces for a lifetime, unlike flu, which is unlikely to have sequelae. Therefore, Professor Zhang Nanxun appealed that Wuhan pneumonia must not be underestimated.

(13,485 posts)If I'm reading this correctly, those who get the virus and do not suffer the pneumonic portion of the sickness recover in 2 weeks on average. Those who fall into Wuhan pneumonia have extremly severe reactions that last long and leave lung scars that don't heal even if they recover. I know that Pneumonia scars are common from any source but it sounds like this may be worse. It also says they don't know if the virus can be completely cured. That may be refering to the scaring. There's a lot more.
I think this is worthy of its own OP. It's a site and information source that a lot of us are interested in knowing. As a comment it won't get much traction.
Thanks

I tried to buy them on Amazon and it wasn't until after the arrival date that the shipper said that China doesn't allow them to be shipped out. Not that I mind, but why did they wait four weeks to tell me?

(21,675 posts)on Amazon. As was said, no longer available. They're kind of hard to breathe with tho. Two days ago, I caught a stomach flu and have been in bed since. Severe headache and nausea/vomiting. It is miserable. It's not a regular flu, as there are no respiratory symptoms, so no antiviral available.
I have a dr. appt. tomorrow, and hope she'll give me some anti-nausea and stronger than Aleve headache meds, cause they aren't cutting it.

(10,885 posts)My son was in Home Depot last weekend and said people were buying masks by the cartons. He spoke with a woman who was sending them to relatives in China because they're difficult to find there. Strange - they're made in China, shipped here for sale, and now these have to make the round trip back.
Feel better soon, shanti. Pull the covers over your head and try to sleep through it.

Ive been paying attention to that one because I have family in Japan, and my daughter-in-laws cousin from Seoul is supposed to visit them this weekend. Ugh.
Im scheduled to travel to Japan this spring, but will likely be postponing the visit. But WTF is going to happen to the Olympics in Japan this summer, if this doesnt turn around fast?

(8,767 posts)There was a press release today that there is a case in my home county (Humboldt county on north coast of California). There is nothing specific offered about the case (who, where, etc.) and info on local medical facilities and common sense.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Press release from the Department of Health and Human Services:
The Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services Public Health Branch has received confirmation from the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of one case of COVID-19 in a Humboldt County resident. A close contact who has symptoms is being tested as well.
This marks the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in Humboldt County. Presently, the ill individuals are doing well and self-isolating at home, while being monitored for symptoms by the Public Health Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control Unit.
Close contacts of these individuals will also be quarantined at home and monitored for symptoms by Public Health staff. With the amount of foreign travel by county residents, including travel to China, it is not surprising that a case has emerged locally. Additional cases may occur either in returning travelers or their close contacts.
Its important to remember that the risk to the general public remains low at this time, said Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich.

(8,767 posts)far from Los Angeles (like 800 miles) and 300 miles north of San Francisco. There is a small commercial airport that does have direct flight to and from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Denver.
No way to tell from the lack of information about the local infection.
