This is a screaming red siren, but in the daily barrage of crazy, can we hear it?Trump is not only trying to rewrite history of Russias intervention in 2016, he is now using the power of the presidency to conceal their 2020 scheme to re-elect him. Dangerous!

A reminder: There is only one mechanism *left* to remove the POTUS - the 25th Amerndment:
Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office
In other words... we're fucked.

(33,135 posts)But, alas, the spineless GOP Senate led by Moscow Mitch has declared that Tangerine Idi Amin can do pretty much anything he wants to get re-elected if he believes it's in the best interests of the US... Which, inevitably, he does.
In doing so, they moved from "Slippery Slope" to "Buttered Frozen Waterfall" with the non-stroke of a pen.
I am looking forward to the full support of the GOP Senate and Trump's Personal Lawyer and Former AG Billy Barr to continue this precedent for a future Democratic President. In fact, I would hope a future Democratic President keeps Billy Barr on as AG to position him to continue his work or resign. His choice.

(86,579 posts)It's definitely CODE:RED. We need to take action, us, the public. Our representatives can only do so much and they are reaching the last tools in the bag... which leaves it to We the People. We have to force action upon them, all of us together, all at once. I don't know if we're going to actually save our own butts or not or what it will take to do so effectively. The options that come to mind for immediate action aren't pretty but may be what it takes.
We are being subtly and not so subtly told that we need to act, now. It's the only legal way that these officials can warn us that WE need to do something because they are doing all they can within their parameters of power that we assigned them and they need us to back them up, now. We are numerous and we need to do something, we can't sit back and hope our representatives to do it all for us, that's not how it's supposed to work. This is about survival now.
I don't have the answers but I hope we coalesce around something fast. I know the weather and flooding are problems in some places but getting out in the streets is a good start.

the sold the meme that "Bernie got shafted out of the nomination by crooked corporate
democrats." And so you Bernie bros should stay home and or vote for Jill Stein.

(557 posts)So much this. This is why I no longer believe in polls. I will wait for the G.E. I have a question. I had cancer some years ago and had chemo,;so please forgive my ignorance. The chemo I took damaged good and bad brain cells and it causes me to forget a lot.I am only 59 years old. My question is this.I voted in the primary right. Do I still need to vote in the GE come November? I also hope Sally Yates were running for something because I sure will vote for her in a hot minute.I would hope when a Dem get the three branches of government back that they they hire all who Dump fired, except James Comey, and those who resigned because of him, starting with Sally.Sally could go back to her job and Adam Shiff can be the top dog in the IC and Kamala Harris AG. I am so glad this board exist and has a spell check. That helps me out so much.So Thank you.

TREASON! trump is Putin's puppet and the ticket that Lawrence talked about last night is not trump/Putin, its Putin/trump, trump is the idiot, Putin is the master and the danger is that Putin is teaching his idiot well.
What is happening in the USA today parallels with the situation in Venezuela and how it evolved.
In Venezuela the master was Fidel Castro, the puppet was Hugo Chavez, all the orders came from Castro and Chavez executed to the tee, when Chavez was no longer needed Castro disposed of him. Anyone who knows the story will say "but Chavez died of cancer", yes he did, but the story is more complicated than that, he started treating himself in Cuba, he was a very energetic man and suddenly he developed this rare type of cancer. One thing that people may not know is that Venezuela has produced some of the best Doctors in the World, and some of the best Dentists as well (if you know of a Venezuelan dentist in your area, go to him/her), these doctors diagnosed the cancer that Chavez had and the treatment that he was given in Cuba, they concluded that Cuban doctors (a myth that they are any good), produced the cancer that killed Chavez.
The story repeats itself, and what happened to Chavez is what happened to Noriega and many pseudo dictators out there, at some point Chavez started making his own decisions, and deep inside Chavez had good intentions, deep inside he wanted to do some good, but when he did Castro decided his pupil was going off script and decided to get rid of him and disposed to bring the idiot Maduro who is dumber than trump, although I believe we are underestimating trump.
If anyone wants to listen to the speeches that Chavez used to give, for hours, you will also find parallels with trump's, people don't seem to understand that the tactics are the same, inflate your base, divide, keep the citizens in constant anxiety, keep them talking about you while the crooks behind the scenes destroy and you only find out when the deed is complete. Super charge the supreme court of yes/corrupted men/women (I predict Bandy will become a Supreme Court judge), change the constitution (that is coming next), give a lot of money to the military (they just gave the biggest budget in history?) and those who believe the military cannot be corrupted are dreaming, weaken all the possible departments that can oppose you, cheat in elections to guarantee you stay in power (already done it in 2016, doing it again with no real safeguards to stop it as far as I can tell), create your own militia (white supremacist groups), and do what you want to do in plain light, for everyone to see because normalizing corruption is important, after a while the citizens stop caring.
Now, what the creature doesn't understand is that he will have reach a point where he is not needed anymore, and I have to think that although he is serving Putin well, that Putin must despise him because Putin seems to be the kind of person who hates stupidity and ignorance, so when the type comes he will dispose of trump, but for us it will be very late, Putin will have a loayalist who is more intelligent and shrewd in power to replace the creature.
If you look at Venezuela, where they are now, people are eating from the garbage, the very rich who supported Chavez have fled the country, the corrupt have stayed because they are becoming rich beyond their wildest dreams, although many of them have been flagged by the World and cannot leave Venezuela, they are jailed in Venezuela and cannot enjoy the spoils as they wish they could. There are no medicines, there is no food, the supermarkets are empty, people are dying, the best minds have also fled the country. That is what trump and enablers have planned for the USA and unless they are stopped soon, they will succeed. Many of them will outlive their usefulness, no one in that kind of corrupt environment is indispensable, and the same people who think they will never be thrown under the bus, when their usefulness comes to an end the punishment will be far worst than having to suffer horrendous tweets, their lives and that of their families will be thrown to share the rest of the country's pains.
I worry that I don't see a concerted effort to stop the hackers, the trolls, and the cheating that is taking place, a lot of people report it, talk about it, but as we all know, talk is cheap, we need action, we need computer experts to stop the hacking and bulling on the internet, and we as Democrats must stop the bickering among us because all we are doing is helping the crooks who may have started the bickering in the first place just to get us going.

(5,275 posts)So much of our system favors Republicans like the Electoral College. Minus that HRC is President.
Then there is the Senate. Wyoming at last count had a population of almost 578,000. California has a population of ever 39 Million. They each get two Senators. One for every 289,000 people in Wyoming, one for every 19+Million in California. This is just one example.
That is why it has been hard for Democrats to take the Senate. Every election many more folks vote for Democrats but it often doesnt matter. Its minority rule.

(4,980 posts)How to peacefully wake up sleepy Americans?
What has been missed or omitted in the constant noise that needs to be shouted? (To us on DU, this news is enough, but to others it may just sail over their shoulder like a tossed bowl of governmental alphabet soup.)
How to express that is not normal, no, this is treason...
How to do this if republicans in Congress wont acknowledge the problem, because theyre complicit?

The problem I see is the humdrum, workaday just going along existence. Is the appearance of calm. Shortages are only apparent at some stores, Ive seen some curious restaurant closings, food prices have been up since the high gas price years, insulin/Rx prices are crazy. I havent been thrown in jail for my opposition to tRump, yet.
Wheres the agitation point for those who arent paying attention? Whats the LCD evidence of more shit to come if tRump succeeds with this, for lack of a better word, coup?
Im working on some answers, but am resisting sharing them. I invite others to think with me, because I could miss something important if Im too certain, too quickly.

(12,154 posts)widespread unemployment, another burst real estate bubble come to mind.
Another foreign terrorist attack would, like 9/11 (despite the obvious incompetence in letting something like that happen), work to his advantage.
A friend of mine thinks the black swan could be the coronavirus.
I certainly dont wish for more pain and suffering in the general population, but these are all things that could affect the electorate.
The only things that would turn the Deplorables against Trump personally would be a) for him to start acting and talking like a Democrat or b) for there to be the release of video of him talking about what chumps his supporters are (although they would likely pass that off as a deep fake, with the guidance of the Fox/RW radio propaganda machine).

(4,980 posts)Managing the potential for a coronavirus outbreak as well as possible with proper medical/scientific expertise, guidance, and resources is certainly a test of his governance. Hes already tried to screw it up by proposing an irresponsible 34% cut to the Global Health Fund. Thank goodness the Democrats in the House can check him in the budgeting process like theyve done before. The whole thing makes me shudder, but my plan is to stay informed and collected with more frequently washed hands as I hope for the best for the entire country and world.
Ive been thinking Id ask folks in a small, but ostensibly growing town on the outer edge of a purple area why a fast food restaurant failed after being open for less than a year. Combining such with asking if theyve heard of grenell, who does not have a background in intelligence. Is one example of how to bring the news down to the ground with increased urgency. Oh, and expressing very directly that tRump is a threat to the American way of life.
Eta: Im not going to try to wake up deplorables, rather its the more moderate people around them Im interested in. The ones that rarely hear how they fit into a more progressive society. Never trumpers in my family trying to choose a Democratic candidate. Close friends and family? Were already aware.
