This establishes a legal record that Stone is going to prison to protect Trump

Four Ways Bill Barr Fucked Up the Roger Stone Cover-Up
https://www.emptywheel.net/2020/02/20/four-ways-bill-barr-fucked-up-the-roger-stone-cover-up/

<<snip>>

The whole scandal probably led ABJ to tailor her comments to address it. On top of making clear how outrageous Stone’s obstruction was, she also alluded to the tweets of the President. She ended her statements by saying, “He was not prosecuted, as some have claimed, for standing up for the president. He was prosecuted for covering up for the president.” She backed that by noting Stone’s comment to Randy Credico that he, Stone, couldn’t take the Fifth because it would hurt the President. This establishes a legal record that Stone is going to prison to protect Trump — far stronger than what went in for Scooter Libby, who was also going to prison to protect his superiors.

Add that to Barr’s statements during confirmation that pardoning someone because of their false testimony is obstruction, and when the eventual commutation does come, the record will already be developed that Trump is engaging in obstruction by doing so.

Again, this is not to say that Barr won’t still succeed with this cover-up. But along the way, he did a number of things that will significantly raise the cost of it.

Barr said, "Well, as you know, the Stone case was prosecuted while I was attorney general. And I supported it. I think it was established, he was convicted of obstructing Congress and witness tampering. And I thought that was a righteous prosecution. And I was happy that he was convicted."

Trump was accused of the same things and yet the complicit, cowardly GOP Senate said it's ok.

It would truly be "righteous" if it ends up that combined together, Dis-Barr & MF45's statements and actions, will result in another obstruction charge with which to impeach MF45 one more time.

The emptywheel piece linked in the OP is an excellent read.

We all know trump doesn't consider anyone a friend, he has no friends, and Stone is definitely not one, but Roger Stone has "INSURANCE", just like Rudy has, they know the deep secrets that could get the SOB out of office very quickly, and the creature is trying to protect himself, I am sure he doesn't give a bit about Stone personally, for all we know he may despise him like he despises many people around him, but he needs to keep those secrets secret, so he WILL pardon Stone, he cannot afford that information to go out, the conspiracy of the 2016 election with the Russians will be brought to light and he cannot afford that.
