If the Russians favored the Dems in any way, why are Reps against election security?

Are the Russians trying to influence our elections? Yes they are. So are the Chinese. So are countries that are allied with us. Obviously the Russians have ill intentions for the United States. They want to sow chaos so that American power in the world diminishes. They want Americans to believe all of the horrible things that are being said so that there is a feeling of despair.

Nunes is an ass. He is counting on his audience to think that Russian interference is ALL or NOTHING. The problem that I have seen on DU recently is that we are buying into that idea. Russians have COMPLETE control of our elections? They wish. They have as much control as we let them have. If we despair and decide not to vote, or not to vote for a particular candidate because that candidate will lose, then we are handing control of the election to the Russians. They are not taking it.

If we vote in such overwhelming numbers that they cannot possibly get away with cheating, then WE have control. That is the key. We should be fighting in this primary to select the candidate that we feel strongly about. Is democracy so weak that we can't have disagreements? Once the nominee is selected in as fair and transparent a way possible, then WE ALL get behind that Democratic Party nominee and we vote for the policies of the Democratic Party and the candidate.

The Russians are trying to influence the elections. They may be actively trying to cheat by hacking. We can still overcome that if we show up in November in numbers large enough that they can't cheat big enough to win. They have to keep it close because everyone knows there are more progressives and moderates than conservatives in the US. Everyone, even the Republicans know that high turnout favors Democrats because our policies are meant to work for the average citizen not just the wealthy. That is why they are trying to get us to believe that the election is rigged. They are trying to rig it so that we don't show up, so that they can squeak by again. We cannot let them do that.

No matter who!

I have my preferences in the primary and my desires for the direction of the country, but I refuse to allow my own disappointments to overshadow the importance of electing anyone other than Trump or the GOP to office this year. The worst Democratic Party candidate is better than the best Republican candidate...PERIOD!

They cannot beat Democrats on policy. They can't beat our numbers, so they lie. They cheat. They use any number of unethical and likely illegal strategies to make things close enough so they can steal the election.

A lot of Democrats do know this. A lot more people who don't vote need to know it too.

What if the polls have our candidate winning by 30% for weeks leading up to the election, exit polls say we'll have 370 electoral college votes, it's going to be a landslide... and then the hackable machines and tabulizers come back with a narrow popular vote loss for Trump (or even a win, because why not) but 271 votes for him? What happens then? What recourse do we have, with no paper trail?

I absolutely believe that if the election were done the old-fashioned way, with paper ballots, we would have nothing to worry about. But what do we do if the election is obviously fcked with, even in plain sight? A huge turnout and a huge majority in the actual vote mean nothing if false election results get certified. That's what worries me.

I'm not arguing with anybody who says that we'll be fine, that Russia doesn't 100% control the election... I just want reassurance about what recourse we have even if it's flagrantly stolen.

The point of my message was not that "we'll be fine". The point of the message is that we have to be prepared to do everything in our power to go against what they are planning to do.

They will very likely try to pull something, but it is much harder to do that when a vast majority know they voted one way. It will be easier to mobilize and protest if a lot of people know they voted for the Democrat and Trump still wins.

Unfortunately there is no reassurance except that we unify and fight to prevent and to protest if the worst happens.

I feel like a conspiracy theorist sometimes when I think about this, but given how helpless we are right now as we watch our democracy being dismantled from the inside, right in front of our eyes, it seems that we'd be just as helpless if the election is brazenly stolen with the whole world watching.

when you've installed a smelly old dictator in the WH who simply ignores Congress. And the Senate majority dictator simply ignores the House.

It is he and not Trump who determines which laws are passed and which judges are confirmed to lifetime positions. Trump is Putin's useful idiot who likes to ride around NASCAR racetracks in his limousine and attack people he doesn't like with childish names and endless tweets.

This election the Senate races need to be watched for interference as closely as the WH race. Even if Moscow Mitch loses, if Republicans retain control of the Senate they'll just install some other smelly old dictator.
