Today is the 40th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice

I cannot help but feel like if that game was played today, the USA's coach would order his players to step aside and let the Russians score as many goals as they please.

I wanted the USA spirit embodied by that team back.

We got it on the overnights, I remember that I didn't see it live. And we were so happy. It was a great day for the country. We went to church later where a prayer of thanks was offered for the victory.

My father, always eager to spoil everyone's good time, told me that the Soviet players would probably be thrown into prison when they got home; tortured or worse; their families would be threatened, or have any government privileges they enjoyed taken away because of the USSR's humiliating loss in the Olympics. None of that actually happened, I think, but my Dad never missed an opportunity to badmouth the Soviet Union. He was a real gung-ho Cold Warrior...

Olympics with family and friends. It was such an exciting experience and we got to meet so many of the athletes just walking around the village. I remember being in the hockey stadium and not quite aware of what was going on, but just the energy of that moment was electrifying.

My main priority at the time was collecting Olympic pins, and I had quite an impressive collection. It was such a fun, magical time. I sometimes wish I would have been a little older to be able to appreciate it a bit better, but I loved every minute of it.
