New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has kidney tumor that's likely cancerous

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has a likely-cancerous tumor on his left kidney that will be surgically removed in March, Murphy confirmed late Saturday.

Murphy, 62, the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, learned of the three-centimeter tumor during a recent checkup, spokesman Mahen Gunaratna said. About 90 percent of tumors of this type are cancerous.

The governor will undergo a partial nephrectomy in early March at a hospital in New York City, where he will remain for several days before being discharged, Gunaratna said. He is expected to rest up for a few days and gradually return to working full time; he is expected to speak at a high-profile public event in mid-March.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver will serve as acting governor while Murphy is in the hospital.

The governor’s doctor believes the tumor is “fully treatable” because it was discovered early, and he is not expected to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment, Gunaratna said.

1. Good luck Governor, I had a similar condition treated 11 years ago...

100% ablation with margin and no recurrence (so far - I believe that it will get me eventually, but not today!)

Early detection is critical for kidney cancer because if you are having symptoms, it may already be too late. Hope all goes well for him and his family.

2. I had renal cell carcinoma about six years ago

and it's highly treatable (if not curable) through surgery. I too had a partial nephrectomy (removal of part of a kidney) and have recovered fully.

There is a danger with this kind of cancer, however, even if it is fully removed, and that it that it is a kind of cancer that tends to pop up again (not metastasizing but a new cancer), so he'll need to have a kidney scan (no big deal) annually for the rest of his life.

He'll be fine.
