Italy coronavirus cases soar as authorities scramble to find patient zero

Italian authorities have announced sweeping closures in the country's north as they scramble to contain Europe's biggest outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

Italy's confirmed cases surged from three on Friday morning to more than 130 by Sunday morning.

The majority of coronavirus infections are concentrated in mainland China (with more than 78,800 cases), followed by Japan (738) and South Korea (602). Italy's spike now marks the biggest outbreak outside of Asia.

At least 132 people have been infected with the virus in Italy, Angelo Borrelli, head of the country's Civil Protection agency, said at a Sunday press conference, adding that of those patients, 26 are in intensive care, two have died and one has recovered.

I am seeing a small number of confirmed cases in several major cities at home and abroad now, so it is spreading.

I recall a five day incubation period, so weekly changes should indicate the extend of the outbreaks.

From the current data, the fatality rate is 3.15%, but it is early, still, considering the number of new cases vs. recovered.

The map does not show any so far. I will check into that.

They may not be reporting, but who knows.

Fewer cases in Australia than one would expect. Maybe summer will be the firebreak.

Perhaps so. I hadn't considered that.

Let's hope so because it looks like a pandemic in the making.

So you would expect it to take off there. Maybe it is, and it's not on the radar yet. But maybe the physical environment isn't conducive to it. Even without testing, you'd think they would be seeing an uptick in unexplained pneumonias by now. Ditto India.

Every place that has significant clusters is currently experiencing winter conditions, with the exception of Singapore. Even in Italy, it's in the colder North, not the sunny South.
