White Louisiana judge called black sheriff's deputy the N-word, has apologized but refused to resign

A Louisiana judge who called a black sheriff’s deputy and a black law clerk the N-word has publicly apologized but refused to resign.

Jessie LeBlanc, a district court judge in Assumption Parish, La., admitted in an interview with local CBS affiliate WAFB that she used the word in text messages with a different deputy, with whom she was having an affair.

LeBlanc was apparently upset after searching the phone of that deputy, Bruce Prejean, and discovering the phone number of another judge’s clerk.

“At least I was NEVER unfaithful to you with ANYONE — much less a [N-word],” LeBlanc wrote to Prejean, according to text messages obtained by WAFB.

But I agree she should not judge anyone. Any African American will have grounds for appeal.

From the article:

Governor John Bel Edwards has called on 23rd Judicial District Court Judge Jessie LeBlanc to resign after she admitted to sending racist text messages in an interview with WAFB’s Scottie Hunter. The racial slurs were used in reference to an Ascension Parish deputy and a court employee.

Gov. Edwards said:

“The admitted and repeated use of racial slurs by a judge who has taken an oath to administer justice fairly and impartially is wrong, period. There is never any circumstance or context in which such derogatory and degrading language is okay.

Sadly, inequities still exist in society and in our judicial system. Judge LeBlanc has compromised her ability to preside as a judge, and she has damaged the judiciary. She should resign. The people of the 23rd Judicial District and our state deserve better.”
