made a proposal for something like that?
The public option would have to be more attractive than most employer provided plans. If the saving were going to be enough, lower premiums might make employers favor it. Competition like that might force private insurance companies to offer better coverage at lower rates, or run them out of business.
State right up front that it's being designed to faze out private comprehensive plans. Private insurers might end up only offering some supplemental plans if they were even needed.

(13,616 posts)The only thing people love about most of those plans is that it's part of their pay. Ask how many would love their plan if they had to pay all of their deductible and out of pocket for about three years in-a-row like I did? Probably not so much.

(6,690 posts)It's fine if an employer wanted to throw you some extra money in the form of a health savings account or flexible spending account for you. Give companies the tax incentives to do so....
But this silliness of the company signing on for a group policy and the employee has no choice is just ridiculous. My advantage plan is through the UAW as the widow of a retiree and they just pushed everyone into Aetna as the only option. I can opt out of their insurance but then I lose the $76 a month they reimburse me for the premiums. $76 may not sound like much but for me it matters a lot.
So even with public option, we really need to give the buy the option, not the employer....
