(29,199 posts)I wouldn't worry too much about my teen contracting the virus as the mortality rate for this age group is fairly low. That said, why risk it... and why spread the infection back to your family and community.
The trip can be made at a later date.

(33,643 posts)I wouldn't worry about going anywhere in the USA at this time, myself ... I really don't think the 'odds' are any different wherever you may happen to be.
If we start seeing major outbreaks in certain areas, then I would change my attitude. A couple of people having it in a huge county is not enough to make me afraid to go to that county.
That's just me, and I don't have kids. I might look at it different if I did
And kids are at very low risk anyway.

(13,485 posts)I don't envy your position because we're on the cusp between being an issue of concern and not having to worry. Things may change rapidly so I wouldn't hesitate to make a last moment decision. The kids will likely be fine in any case but you need to consider the age and condition of the people you and your child live with. As far as being stuck there, I doubt that would be a problem right now. We can't really know the answers for certain.

(13,485 posts)The virus does seem to be in the wild in that area according to genetic research results.

(7,220 posts)I think about it from a public health perspective. Wouldn't it be prudent to encourage everyone to curb travel, public gatherings etc. for a few weeks, or until we better understand who's infected? Doing so while also engaging in safe hygiene practices could curb the spread significantly. Because it's not just about your teen being infected or quarantined, it's about all of the people who could be carrying and/or transmitting the disease, making the severity of outbreak worse than it would have been if we'd exercised some restraint.
As I understand, two Solano County school districts (Travis and Elk Grove) have told schools to be prepared for an outbreak. Hosting kids from all around the country doesn't sound like much of an outbreak preparation plan, but maybe those aren't the districts aren't the ones your child is planning to visit.
Still.

(253 posts)We live in heavily populated NYC suburb. I just thought that if an area may be quarantined it may be an area that has cases already. Also concerned about spending time in touristy spots of SF and of course air travel in general.

(17,286 posts)Im surprised the school trip leader hasnt had a meeting or sent a document with the schools position on either why they think it is safe or why they advise cancelling. Doesnt give me much confidence that they havent even considered the option of cancelling.

(38,311 posts)Nor would I have forgiven them if they hadn't let me quit high school for college.
Any more high school might have killed me. All those people who thought high school was important for MY social development were idiots. The only thing I learned in high school was how to be invisible, because whenever I failed at that horrible things happened to me.
Ask your child. The final decision is yours, but a high school child is old enough to discuss this like an adult.
My children, nephews, and nieces all feel at home in San Francisco and other large international cities (some have become world travelers) even when they can't afford to live in them.
I thank God my parents celebrated my escape from the wretched affluent white world they were trapped in by their employment.
My siblings and I all fled, just as my parents fled when they retired.
I actually feel sorry for my middle and high school classmates who stayed home and were successful. I could never have been successful in that environment.
The more I saw of the world, the more secure I felt about my place in it.

(34,169 posts)Literally, the last minutes. The kids, freshmen in HS, were on the plane and seated and someone from the school pulled the plug. They all deboarded. You can imagine the panic of the other passengers when that happened.

(56,828 posts)even though they were going to be doing some archaeology dig in a sparsely populated area near Pompeii in southern Italy, I guess they were worried about being stuck in Italy when the trip was over if travel restrictions were increased (they'd go through Rome airport both ways)
