10:47 am....trump sent out a tweet downplaying the coronavirus...twitter should shut him down

So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!

Once a virus has spread throughout the population, people develop some immunity to it. A new one is more deadly because no one has developed antibodies to fight it off.

But really 70,000 deaths a year from a virus fully incorporated into a population does NOT make me feel safe. Wow, he really is an idiot.

Oh and his post indicates a 4% death rate from the cornoavirus. I thought it was averaging 3%? When did it go up?

Mon Mar 9, 2020, 11:10 AM
Mar 2020

... is that this virus is exponentially more contagious than any flu strain we’ve experienced. Apparently it is very easily spread through casual contact. Just being in a room with someone coughing is enough to be infected, and reports suggest it remains alive and can be acquired from surface contamination MUCH longer than a flu virus.

That means that more people will become infected over the life of the pandemic, and that more people will likely die. Comparing the mortality rate without also comparing the infection rate and the Ro rate is stupid.

But, of course, it’s Тяцмр, so what should we expect?

It climbs exponentially unless unless they do significant quarantine - which is now what Italy is attempting to do.

The longer you wait to quarantine, the harder it will be to achieve.

This is beyond Trump's ability to comprehend because he is so fixated on what he perceives is best for himself personally. If he'd handled the coronavirus well, it would have helped him but he's too stupid to realize that.

Mon Mar 9, 2020, 02:14 PM

Flu: Millions of us get an annual flu vaccination (Influenza A & B). This protects the public from mass infections that would otherwise overwhelm our community health resources. Therefore, there’s no need for community containment measures or quarantines.

COVID-19: There is no vaccine available for this virus. What happens if there’s no vaccine? What happens when no one has immunity to this disease? Everyone is now susceptible to a disease worse than Influenza A & B. If the rate of transmission isn’t controlled through containment or quarantine, community health care systems are overrun to the point of collapse or failure.

At this point, our best strategy is limit exposure to the virus and slow the rate of transmission. Otherwise, your friends at work will seek treatment at your local hospital for respiratory failure and find there are no beds available and the hospital staff (doctors, nurses, technical staff, receptionists, janitorial, maintenance, etc.) has been overwhelmed through illness or complete physical exhaustion. A nightmare scenario.

Try telling them that.

Maybe somebody can sit down with flash cards and explain to him that the average person with seasonal flu infects 1.3 people, while the average person with covid-19 infects 2.8. And, that the death rate from the flu is 0.1%, while the estimated death rate of the coronavirus is 3.4%.

Is why public education, competent governance, and faithful leadership is so important. tRump’s tweet is like the hucksterism that lands people with poor oil and gas lease terms when they are lead to think that a 1/16 share is worth more than 1/4. He was likely given sheets of numbers and statistics then knowingly cobbled this together to sell a fraud of life and death consequences to the general public. Certainly, some of his underlings know the truth, and shame on them for letting the pResident present these figures in this way.

From his stated numbers, 22 deaths for 546 confirmed cases is a 4.0% death rate. If this coronovirus was the common flu with a 0.1% death rate*, then only half of one person (.546) would be dead at this point.

22 Coronavirus deaths vs .5 flu deaths - that’s the real comparison that the pResident of the United States should care about.

Twitter should pull his tweet.

Now, all this said, it is hopefully early in its spread and with more/better testing the 4% death rate should fall some. The pResident hiding the truth isn’t helping the public understand how to handle this disease.

*Retrieved this rate from Wikipedia (3/9/20 @ 12:32 pm CT), as tRump’s numbers do not reflect the reality he’s intentionally withholding. Need to note that I rounded down and kept it at half a person, to make the relative magnitude more relatable - still more accurate than what the pResident is suggesting.
