For example, it was obvious to me and other experienced reporters that the Lion Air pilots had been swiftly overcome by a problem that that they had not been trained to prepare for because it was related to a new control system, Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), that theyalong with all other MAX flight crewsdid not know even existed.
And yet Boeing insisted to us that the pilots could have overcome this fatal malfunction by treating it as a condition known as runaway stabilizerone that was actually included in the flight manual as a legacy itemeven though the actions triggered by the MCAS were far more extreme.
Now the House report confirms, shockingly, that Boeing knew all the time that the pilots had only 10 seconds to identify the problem and deal with it before being overpowered by the MCASs rogue actions.

(33,310 posts)I'm saying it helps to know the context before you render binary opinions like "I'll never fly on one ever ever ever".
If/when they're back in the air, avoiding them won't be that easy.

(11,045 posts)which is why I included the options of yes - no alternative flights; and yes - if there is a surcharge for refusing to fly on one.

(594 posts)When the max is cleared to fly, it will be as safe as any airline to fly, if not safer.

(33,310 posts)I have a friend who's come out of retirement to help with the testing. I hear them overhead pretty regularly - Boeing field is straight south of downtown.

we had to make an unscheduled stop in Abidjan Ivory Coast we were there for 6 hours while they fixed the plane, it was nerve wracking then a couple of weeks later that model crashed just on the other side of a mountain where we stayed in Addis Ababa
