Could be sooner, much sooner. He will walk away and leave this mess in Pence's lap.

ETA: It's disheartening to see so many in this thread who are assuming a "business-as-usual" backdrop to this prediction and our near-term future. I foresee massive disruption to our country from covid19, exacerbated by the critical delay in response, which has pivoted us from potential containment to merely mitigation. Disruption is a huge key factor.

That assumes that he doesn't die from Covid-19 first, which is an altogether reasonable prediction as well.

(66,381 posts)I like your optimism. But never.
People say he never quits; he does all the time in the form of declaring bankruptcy. But one can do that in relative privacy. POTUS is the most visible position in the world. Quitting where everyone can see his failure is not something he's going to do voluntarily.
intrepidity
(7,306 posts)Just like a bankruptcy.
pwb
(11,276 posts)He is a quitter.
He will frame it as doing so for the good of the country, and that Pence is most qualified to lead the country through this crisis (and he'll take credit for that, because he appointed Pence to lead the virus response).
Within a matter of days, reality is going to hit Don hard between the eyes, and he will cut and run, like always.
He will disappear to some remote safehouse where he can't be extradited and where he thinks the virus can't get him. Saddam's hidey hole, if you will.
LonePirate
(13,424 posts)He will probably cite health reasons. Of course, the election will need to resemble the outlook for Republicans in the November 2008 election for there to be a chance he sees the writing in the wall and asks someone to read it to him.

(42,714 posts)There were those who predicted he'd drop out before the Republican Convention. Or right after the convention. Or before the debates. Or before election day. Or after election day but before the Electoral College vote was final. Or before inauguration day. Or after inauguration day. Or before the Mueller report. Or before the impeachment vote. And on and on and on.

That number is everything. A 1-point drop is more meaningful than anything related to turnout. In fact I would happily cancel every Democratic turnout operation in exchange for that number frozen at 40% on election day

(12,712 posts)I have my own theory that he is in this for the full Monty and that is total dictatorship within the shortest time possible. His personality itself predicts that and he has been rather successful so far, IMHO.
This is the primary reason that the GOP wants to ride his tail. They are confident that a con man like him can do it.
Now that his narcissism has been stoked by the successes of conditioning the population and deteriorating the system, the next logical step is total control. Imagine being where he is at with all his personality disorders and mastery of confidence games? Where else could you go in order to get your fix? I am certain that all dictators have proclivities that we would find very difficult to understand and their motivations towards power and control are also quite different.
To resign or lose the election would be major letdowns to his persona and a failure to accomplish his ulterior motives and ultimate goal.
I guess I should say, bookmark that and we will be finding out soon enough.

(2,118 posts)Some don't. But, a fascinating discussion going here without name calling. This is what makes DU great. I will bookmark this and agree with OP. 2 quick reasons why I think it is already in place.
1. We are already seeing much more of VP exposure in last 2 weeks that we have seen in 3 years. To make Mikey look Presidential I feel. Hell my 2 year old Dalmatian male would look Presidential next to Drump and He cannot stop bouncing off the walls right now.
2. I agree that he will go into exile,to non-extradition country to avoid state charges. Hear me out on this, please, as I have not read a comment yet on how. I believe he will schedule a "summit" before resignation to a certain country. He will fly there for this summit and AirForce1 will come back empty. Donald avoided all media scrutiny "post resignation" and what would military people who handle AF1 duties do? They would not have choice but to bring our country's property back. The media, for sure, will already be controlled in whichever country he goes to.
And as a bonus thought, I would not be one of the "advisors" to the Pres on this trip. From recent history and facts, they all think Donald loves them! When AF1 lands with those idiots on board, the TP shortage right now will pale in comparison to the popcorn shortage of that moment. If it happens,,thanks for listening.

(7,306 posts)I am six months older now, and those six months have been quite the education in the infinite cruelity of this madman at the helm.
It's true, that in March, while I could foresee how devastating this pandemic could become, I could not have predicted that over 200,000 Americans would die from Covid19 (well, *that* part was easy to predict; it's the next part that wasn't), and there wasn't massive universal outrage at Trump's failures.
I admit that, as cynical as I already was in March, I did not expect the Magat cult to morph into the anti-mask (who dafuck saw that coming?!) death cult it is today.
I, naively, thought there *must* be a bottom to Trump's deep well of depravity and shamelessness. And if not his, then at least everybody else's.
And, while I'm mindful at this time of the foolishness of premature concession, the past six months have taught me that I must mournfully admit that I was wrong in the OP.
I remember being that person who could not conceive of where America is now, and I grieve for how much we have all lost in such a short time. Sigh.
