The overriding purpose of the government is collective security; Trump's government has failed miserably.
The country is doing a slow motion shut down because the government was not smart enough to accept, and act on, the early warnings to protect the nation from the virus, or have a plan to deal with the possibility of mass illnesses.
The present situation is much like a house fire; it would have been prudent and effective to call the fire department when the smoke was first seen rather than waiting for the house to be fully involved in flame. Instead, the government, without any investigation or evidence, kept saying the the smoke was from the BBQ grill, it is normal, and nothing to worry about. People Bar-B-Q every day.... We know that there will be house fires and we invest in systems to address the events to prevent the spread to the whole neighborhood, it was only a matter of time before a viral pandemic wold strike. We knew it would come.
So when the inevitable happened, instead of leadership is denial, censorship, and excuses and knee jerk reactions and went searching for the innocent to blame. Trump's continuing denials not only failed to help, but by convincing people that it was a hoax, and an attack on him personally and his presidency in general, he has contributed to the spread of the disease.
The deaths, the illnesses, the fear, the financial losses all rests on the shoulders of the President of the United States, who was unprepared either intellectually or emotionally to deal with a crisis. We will only be safe when the president has left the People's House.

Get out this weekend and spend money at your local establishments.
As long as there are no big crowds, get out there and help your community while you can. These small businesses are going to be in a world of hurt for the unforseen future, and they need our help now.

(8,445 posts)Having something to do is something that a lot of people don't think about. I mean, I've got plenty of tp, but using it doesn't really occupy that many minutes of my day.
Seriously, though, I've been thinking a lot about what things to do while I'm pretty much isolating myself. I've always got a long list of projects, so hopefully I can motivate myself to do them. One very big plus is that we can interact online, which is something we couldn't do back in the day. I grew up in ND, and there were times we were stranded at home because of a blizzard. Often times the power would go out. Four days without electricity was horrible.
I was thinking that there probably wouldn't be any harm in going for a drive now and then. It'll probably be a mood-brightener. If we have nice weather, I can work in my yard.
I do feel bad for the people who own and/or work at establishments that are going to take a hit, but I won't be going out to eat or doing any shopping or going to any events. We're a spoiled civilization, it seems, so I'm sure a lot of folks are just going to live life as usual and do nothing to slow the virus so our medical facilities can better handle what's coming.

(12,712 posts)I thought I would dust it off and bring it to light.
Now, from a conspiratorial view, not acting swiftly on the potential of a pandemic, (and the virus could well have been here since January, but unconfirmed) would fit the MO of a dictator. That may sound extreme, but my bias is that a national emergency would assist Trump and the GOP in what they are actually trying to accomplish: weaken us, destroy things, assume more control.
These are NOT the good old days of partisan politics, and I think that is the bias or filter that people are using when they fail to really see the gravity of the situation and what it implies.

(30,613 posts)...but instead, President Turd fired the fire department.
https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/trump-struggles-explain-why-he-disbanded-his-global-health-team-n1153221
One of Donald Trump's most important missteps in dealing with the coronavirus outbreak happened before anyone had even heard of COVID-19. In fact, the president's first error came back in 2018.
It was two years ago when Trump ordered the shutdown of the White House National Security Council's entire global health security unit. NBC News had a good report on this recently, noting that the president's decision "to downsize the White House national security staff -- and eliminate jobs addressing global pandemics -- is likely to hamper the U.S. government's response to the coronavirus."
It was against this backdrop that a reporter asked Trump late last week about whether he was prepared to "rethink having an Office of Pandemic Preparation in the White House." The president replied:
"I just think this is something, Peter, that you can never really think is going to happen. You know, who -- I've heard all about, 'This could be...' -- you know, 'This could be a big deal,' from before it happened. You know, this -- something like this could happen.... Who would have thought? Look, how long ago is it? Six, seven, eight weeks ago -- who would have thought we would even be having the subject? ... You never really know when something like this is going to strike and what it's going to be."
It's worth emphasizing that this is Trump's second explanation related to his decision to disband his global health security team. "I'm a business person," he explained two weeks ago in response to a similar question. "I don't like having thousands of people around when you don't need them. When we need them, we can get them back very quickly."

And so the denial habit. So the bubble habit.
Denial and mindlessness are the twin habits of the lazy.
Love is effort. Laziness is anti-love.
The lazy fake love as effort to get real effort back, but they don't ever make real, helpful effort because they don't want to see what needs doing. What needs attention.
They are the banality of evil. Destroyers of communities and civilizations.
We can still learn from what we've experienced, and never forget. Never forget. Forgetting is a form of laziness, too. That's what they depend on from society, and why they come out of their dark places from time to time.
We will not be safe from our own forgetfulness or fear.
So we have to SEE this historical event as a lesson of our history.
And not forget it. Not sugar coat it. Not legitimize it.
But teach it going forward.

(11,885 posts)And now want to lie their way out of this by hiding the truth , they've caused this health crisis to be a lot worse then it should have been. trump at every turn does things to undermine the government to adequately response , instead slowing response then trump claims they're doing great, when they aren't. He had nothing to do with the Mnuckin Pelosi agreement other than try to claim he was behind that when he wasn't and tried to undermine that too. He's done that before too. trump has made this worse by his lying too . We don't have testing available to everyone now because of trump, no matter who HE claims is responsible , and its never him. His I'm not responsible will be played by Democrats until the election over and over again admitting he failed us . Watch trump now weaponize this virus by using it to hurt people more with , not help them.
