(72,531 posts)We're like the Russian people in the Stalinist years. Fighting over TP fer pete's sakes. Empty shelves, stone cold liars for their executive leaders. Curious. I know it is for the best right now. But it is interesting times we live in.

(37,613 posts)Then you'd line up when you heard a rumor that there might be toilet paper delivered later that day. You wouldn't fight over it, you'd stand in line and take what they gave you.
Same for shoes. You'd stand in line and take what they gave you. You're a 30-year-old 5' 9" man and get shoes for a short woman? You take them. Scarce goods are scarce goods. Maybe you can trade them for something useful later, everybody's an entrepreneur in under socialism.
No, they're fighting. For something that's going to be restocked in most cases by the morning. I mean, Romans used smooth rocks.
What's worse? If you order from Wally-world curbside, they reserve it for you and bring it to your vehicle.
That makes the TP battles just embarrassing for the species.

(72,531 posts)we were set before we even heard of the Trump coronations. I think we're good for a solid month, but I wanted some more produce a bag of oranges, some apples - so we decided to go ourselves. there were few people for an afternoon but the Deli and Bakery were closed, the meat section was depleted, no chicken, not much beef but we got to try some new things, like lamb shoulder chops, found some expensive but great Italian made pasta in traditional grains not wheat. At this point we won't be going nowhere.

(28,836 posts)When faced with an uncertain situation, people feel better if they can eliminate one risk, Dr. Jay Zagorsky, a senior lecturer with BUs Questrom School of Business, said in an email to Boston.com. Bulk buying toilet paper eliminates the small risk of running out if quarantined. People might not be able to eliminate the risk of catching coronavirus but they can eliminate the risk of running out of toilet paper, which makes most people feel they have some control in this very uncertain situation.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
