Britain declared war on Germany on the day Poland was invaded, September 1, 1939.

9. In 1939 the French and English had 110 divisions. Germany had 23 in the west...

...and their tanks were largely involved in Poland, with little available along the frontiers with Belgium and France.

Germany was not prepared for a two-front war in 1939.

Aside from a few sallies into the Saar, the Allies did little, giving time for the Germans to defeat Poland, regroup and turn west in May 1940.

There is footage from the excellent series "The World at War" of an interview with a Wehrmacht general who stated that
if the Allies had moved east in force early on, the Nazis would not have been able to last more than a few weeks
