A nightmare

I found out today that my ex husband is in ICU in Canada he is getting better but has no way to get home he went there in April 09 with only his driver's license he went on a Greyhound to meet a man he had been talking to on the internet. He had been sick for several weeks and his boyfriend wouldn't take him to the hospital, their roommate finally insisted now he is very ill and has no passport to reenter the US and the boyfriend insists that someone come and get him. Help I don't know what to do to help him

2. If you can't go yourself (or don't want to) does your ex have family you can contact on his behalf?

He clearly needs help and sounds like the boyfriend isn't wanting to do it. Good luck.

In Washington D.C. and explain the situation to someone there. They will tell you what you need to do.

This is the emergency number 1-888-407-4747

He'll need a birth certificate. Perhaps you can do that from your end.

I'd be a little tempted to leave him where he is. He'll get treatment in Canada and if he survives, won't be in debt for the rest of his life.

Here, not so much.

5. He shouldn't have been able to get across the border on a Greyhound without the ability to get back.

Does he have a WHTI driver's licence?
http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/lang_eng/eng_edl.html

Washington, Michigan, Vermont or New York have WHTI driver's licenses because of regular travel. He should be able to get back across no problem. The only issue would be whomever goes to get him or sends him Greyhound money to get back over.
If he is not from the above states and somehow got across without a passport of some sort, he needs to check with the US Consulate. If he's in ICU, the hospital can probably be happy to get ahold of them for him.

11. He should not have been able to enter Canada at all without a Passport card or the WHTI. They check

The Canadian BP stops all busses and trains and check everyone, even waking up sleepers at the borders. If there's children on the bus or in the vehicle, they check for valid ID and notes to insure the kids aren't going across without permission.
The Passport card is only $55 with the picture at a post office, so is it possible he might have gotten one and forgot he had it?

Since the Ohio DL looks nothing like the Passport Card, he either forgot he had or lost (or sold) his Passport ID, or he must have been picked up by a Canadian on the US side to have gotten across without being checked for ID going that way, and is stretching it about taking the Greyhound into Canada.
