Freepers still on dial-up

I busted laughing when I read this complaint and commiserations...

"There's no reason for a talk show to use a bitrate higher than 32kbps!"

OMG, can they not even afford a 56k modem?!

I do the same thing with mike Malloy and Stephanie miller, NPR and a music show out east.

Frequently, the stream seems to want to go to stereo, 128kbps for a talk show. the files get pretty huge, for no good reason. 70 megs for 52kbps mono, so I would image 128k is somewhere in the 140~180 meg range, stereo 240~360 meg range.

I can store 40 minutes of good quality video in 360 meg.

For just talk, 32kbps is fine.

I know a number of regulars at my job who can't even get DSL.

so KNOCK IT OFF!

Seriously, DIRECTV came out and just said NO. DISH had to put up 2 different dishes just to get a signal. I get no CELL signal, which is ok by me. My only choice, and I mean my ONLY choice is dial-up.

But it's so beautiful here - I ain't moving!

their only option in their rural area is dial-up.

Personally, I don't feel that my big city whiz-bang state-of-the-art internet access gives me license for sneering at others, even Freepers. I can find plenty of other stuff to sneer at Freepers about, thanks.
