If they did such a good job at stopping the traffic from China and other countries, how did this virus get into our country?
What specifically caused this virus to be so widespread?

The virus spread because they didn't test

(3,240 posts)The easy answer to your second question is that people were not taking the virus seriously, including Trump. When Democrats complained that Trump wasn't doing enough, he called it their (the Democrat's) next hoax to try and impeach him. He made it all about politics instead of about lives.

(565 posts)Lots of infected and asymptomatic folks about hence, the stay at home orders and shutdowns to slow the spread.
Trump was informed in January that China was experiencing a virus breakout. He sent China 17 tons of medical supplies on February 8th as a good will gesture and still dragged his feet over what test protocol to use. The first CDC test was botched, the WHO protocol was offered, some were told to stop testing, then finally he relented and allowed State labs to begin testing. All of this delayed the response and only made the spread worse. Some say 3 to 7 weeks was wasted on social distancing and now finally, stay at home orders being underway in many States.
My take, I'm not an expert.

I am sure someone boarded a plane and unknowingly brought it here.
