The Trump administration is requiring Americans on Social Security to file a tax return to receive the $1,200 coronavirus payment, an added step that is causing confusion and could prevent millions from easy access to relief.
Many lawmakers and advocates for the poor say filing a tax return shouldnt be necessary for people on Social Security since the government already knows how to send this population monthly checks. The $2.2 trillion aid package said that if someone has not filed a 2019 or 2018 tax return, the U.S. Treasury should get their information from Social Security, if applicable.
But, the Internal Revenue Service posted a notice on its website on Monday, instructing Social Security recipients to file a simple tax return, which will be available soon.
People who typically do not file a tax return will need to file a simple tax return to receive an economic impact payment," the IRS said. Low-income taxpayers, senior citizens, Social Security recipients, some veterans and individuals with disabilities who are otherwise not required to file a tax return will not owe tax.

(3,276 posts)Like, a day before the filing deadline, so that the system is guaranteed to crash?
I hate being this cynical, but as Lily Tomlin taught us, no matter how cynical you get, you just can't keep up.
Anyway, thank you for posting this important info.

(22,065 posts)income under, I think, $6K, you don't have to file, but I could be wrong. I file because I do have other income besides SS, and thus, need to reclaim the taxes I had to pay on the other income (they take out deductions), otherwise, you wouldn't get that money (you paid in) back if you don't file.

(29,554 posts)What they should have done is placed a 100% tax on the payments for people who did not qualify. Instead they load up the IRS with no tax due returns.

(54,276 posts)I don't get SS yet, and wouldn't get a cent out of this program even if I did. At least ONE bit of bureaucracy that I will NOT have to worry about.

(146,254 posts)This really affects those who don't normally file at all. That's a minority of SS recipients.

(12,534 posts)Trump wants seniors to die and get off the Social Security rolls. Republicans never wanted Social Security and have alway had a secret desire to scuttle it.

(17,150 posts)I guess just keep checking back for when they post the mini-form so you can file a no-tax return to give them your name, address, and deposit information that they could have just as easily pulled from the SSA system. Since it's being done online, it'll probably just feed straight through with no human intervention (on their end) necessary.
So okay. I'll jump through the hoop (it's not like I have much else to do). It just seems unnecessary.
