Families with children over 16 will not get a $500 check.

Only those 16 & under get the money.

The bill gives $0 to families with children older than 16, a shock to many households already reeling from canceled graduations, and college youths readjusting to life at home with so many universities shut down. Many immigrant families are also learning that they are ineligible. In order for anyone in the family to receive a payment, each person in the household is supposed to have a valid Social Security number.

because when I did my taxes this year I couldn't get a child tax credit for my 17 year old. The 17 year olds get nothing here because they don't count them as children, but they are still in high school and mostly not working. Most of them have never filed taxes, so they won't get any as an individual either.

Yes the child tax credit ends the year your child turns 17. I guess the idea is that they can work on their own at that point?

So from this WP story the $500 child credit only applies who can qualify for the tax credit. You can still claim any children who you pay over 50% of their expenses, as dependents. That is a deduction though not a credit.

I never believe any money comes from the government until it actually arrives.
