Navy barred by Pentagon from disclosing coronavirus cases while carrier outbreak continues

BREMERTON — Kitsap's military installations, including the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, have been barred from disclosing cases of novel coronavirus within their ranks and workforces, even as dozens of new cases spread aboard a deployed aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

The Department of Defense's decision on Monday to shield numbers at individual Navy bases and commands is to prevent them from falling into enemy hands, the Pentagon said.

"We will continue to do our best to balance transparency in this crisis with operational security," said Alyssa Farah, a Pentagon spokeswoman.

The Navy's totals for those who've tested positive for COVID-19 will continue to be posted. As of Monday, there were 245 cases among service members, civilian employees and contractors.

have now compromised military readiness, and now they want to hide how bad the problem is. If we have taken an entire carrier out of action, one wonders how a nuclear sub fleet is managing. How many boomers will have to be taken out of service because the crew is sick?

Our military needs valid information to keep safe. Not just the leadership, but every last service member should be working in concert to keep themselves and their other team mates safe.

Their excuse about some unnamed enemy is weak sauce. This virus is affecting everyone, including our military as well as any foreign enemy. This is not a surprise. The sudden change to hiding the info only compounds the problem and does indeed make it look worse than it might be with full disclosure.

Sweep it under the rug, way up under the rug. That enemy that they speak of is mama, can't let mama know her boy or girl is in danger. The Russians and the Chinese will already know what the battle status of the fleet is.
