He seemed to like the fact that I treated him like a regular guy and just shot the breeze with him, while others in the gathering were treating him like a Star, Legendary Jazz Patriarch, etc. (which he was, of course, but I got the impression he didn't like the limelight that much, especially being lionized by people who didn't know anything about his music).
Marsalis was part of the same great 1950s New Orleans jazz scene that included such outstanding musicians as saxophonist Harold Battiste, drummer Ed Blackwell, clarinetist Alvin Batiste, and so many more.
