Red Governor partners with Blue Doctor who volunteered for Obama

And the result is (so far) one of the best responses to COVID 19 in the country.

(So how about we leave red/blue out of characterizing a state's response and focus on quality instead. I'm tired of being characterized as being out partying my butt off - or worse yet being not worth caring about - because I'm in a do-nothing red state.)

To plot his approach Mr DeWine has, by all accounts, relied heavily on Dr Acton - the last cabinet member selected by the governor when he took office last year. The selection of Dr Acton marked a change for the department - neither of her two predecessors were medical doctors.

"Mistakes that I have made throughout my career have generally been because I didn't have enough facts, I didn't dig deep enough," Mr DeWine said. "So, I made up my mind I was going to have the best information, the best data available."

In his daily briefings, Mr DeWine is quick to defer to Dr Acton for specific questions on the virus and its spread, reminding Ohioans that the state's decisions are driven by science.

Dr. Amy Acton's former name was Amy Beech.

"Ohio's never mattered in the primaries, and we never expected it to drag out this far," says Amy Beech, an Obama volunteer in the Columbus, Ohio, suburb of Bexley. "There really was no infrastructure, and now it's all over the place – within three weeks we have this million-[person] door-knocking campaign."

Beech was referring to the campaign's goal of having its volunteers knock on at least 1 million doors for their candidate in Ohio by Tuesday. Beech and her peers are housing hundreds of out-of-state Obama troops for the effort.

and canceling events before many of the blue states even realized shit was getting serious. He canceled a major annual event before there was a single case in the state, and declared a state of emergency within 24 hours of the first case.

Yet all red states are being lumped together as doing nothing - and any suggestion that not all of the blue politicians failed to pull their heads out of the sand quickly enoug are met with disdain and excuses.

Ths shoudn't be about politics - it should be about working together - as Dr. Acton and Gov. DeWine are doing - to do what is best for Ohio, and our country.

I would never have expected it from DeWine, at least not in recent years. (A long time ago he was what I would have called a reasonable Republican. Not so much recently - but I'm glad he seems to be returning to his roots.)

The best way to guarantee that is to do a good job when it really matters. He's doing a good job, and will probably be re-elected. It won't be because I vote for him, because I won't, but I'm not so partisan I won't credit that he surprised me with how little politics seemed to enter into his decisions, when it was a life-or-death issue like this.

He is doing what any competent governor shoudl be doing. And it is sad that it is surprising when partisan leaders actually do the job they were elected to do.

He is Republican, and I disagree with Him on policy matters . But you can't fault his response to the Corona virus emergency. He has saved lives.
