Homemade face masks, coronavirus, N95: New CDC guidelines and everything to know

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to reverse its recommendation on individuals wearing face masks in public, including home made cloth masks. The White House could announce the new guidelines, based on the CDC's evaluation, as soon as Thursday, according to the Washington Post. The CDC is the US authority on coronavirus protocols and protection to COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The CDC did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

For weeks, the debate has escalated over whether homemade face masks should be used in hospital settings and by individuals in public. It comes at a time when available stock of certified N95 respirator masks -- the essential protective equipment used by health care workers fighting the coronavirus pandemic -- reach critical lows.

For weeks now, the CDC has considered homemade face masks to be used as a last resort in hospitals and medical facilities. Masks made from cotton and elastic certainly won't harm civilians at home or when going out, as long as you're also following other protocols to stay safe.

Leave N95, gowns and face shields for them. Surgical masks are for the masses.

I wore my hand sewn face mask to the store and was very pleased to see almost everyone in the store had on face coverings of some kind (scarves, painters masks, respiratory masks, etc.) and gloves. They also had marks on the floor for social distancing and the cashiers were behind plexiglass.

Someone in authority needs to tell everyone to wear masks so people don't feel uncomfortable or get targeted by Trumpsters/virus deniers.

in the CDC. This is supposed to be a science-based group. Instead, expedience and politics seem to be the order of the day. Masks work, masks don’t work... They are off my list as sources of scientific information.

Their first recommendation was no mask needed. Just don’t touch your face and wash hands. How did that work against an airborne virus.
