Well I have no problem staying home since I'm living in my car again...

Around two Christmases ago I ran into enormous financial problems that I had pretty well solved until our Dear Leader shut down the government. My car blew its engine and I had just bought a new one and I was out of a job.

The job came back but I had a really tough time paying the rent and the bills. The VA kept saying "No problem we got your back". Suffolk County NY has some really good programs, but was more honest about funding.

So, like and idiot, I believed the VA when they told me I had to be evicted first, then show up at the ER and I would be taken care of. Evicted I was, and when I showed up at the ER I was told I should find a relative to stay with.

Huh?

So, after some more runaround, I ended up staying in the car for a month or so until my mental health counselor at the VA made a call to one of the places that refused my calls and they immediately called me and invited me in. That's some juice, eh?

Beacon House turned out to be a couple of dozen houses some billionaire bought to do his good works and help homeless vets get back on their feet. Sounds great, eh?

Never met Saint Frank, and I can't attest to anything about his personal goals or secrets, but this was a very strange environment. I immediately ran afoul of the rules of the house-- I could not use my new coffee pot, and I couldn't even donate it it to replace the crappy and broken coffee pot in the kitchen.

And then we weren't allowed to use the stove in the kitchen. Someone almost started a fire years ago, so no one but staff could use the stove. We had a microwave and a filthy, ancient, beat up toaster oven we could use, although we were constantly threatened with their removal.

Part of the alleged benefit of this house was that we would save money since everything was paid or by the house, including meals. Well, every day the van made the the trip to the offsite kitchen and cam back with dinner, and sandwiches for next day's lunch. Nobody expected gourmet food, but what we got was better than jail food, but not much better than MREs. Most of the guys who were working just went out to eat. Lotsa Popeye's and McDonald's bags in the trash. Chinese and Mexican takeout was big, too.

Anyway, the point was to get us back on our feet, but they seemed, at least in my case, to do everything they could to hold us back. We weren't allowed to have WiFi, although it existed in the house. I got yelled at for using the WiFi in my car in the parking lot because I was "loitering". Lots of rules about coming and going, lights out, etc.

This is getting too long, so let me get to the meat of it-- I was in the hospital for a week last month with pneumonia. The day I was to be discharged from the hospital the hospital was told that I had been "discharged" from Beacon House. That's a euphemism for "thrown out into the street". My offense seemed to be that I was sick.

After some hard negotiating by the hospital, I was reluctantly allowed back as long as I signed some vaguely legal-looking stuff. So I signed, but two days later someone claimed I threw up during breakfast, which was untrue but still got me another immediate "discharge" that I argued my way out of.

After a few more days of this nonsense, they finally got me on one I couldn't argue my way out off. A self-appointed arbiter of cleanliness jumped on me for getting a fork out of the silverware drawer without washing my hands in his view and I replied by saying I was tempted to spit on the floor and kill them all.

This "terroristic threat" got me tossed for good, although I never did find out who the "we" was in the comment "we discussed this". Possibly, I could have just refused to leave to see what would happen, but I chickened out. Truth is, I'm back to work under new rules that are more important that dealing with these clowns.

Biggest problem now-- with Planet Fitness closed, where do I find a shower?

You might want to call around to the churches or a local interfaith counsel. intheflow Apr 2020 #4

Ironically, I worked for years with a program here called Maureen's Haven which was temporary housing largely for farm workers off-season. We had to stop our participation when our UU church burned down.

I also spent a lot of time working with a similar program at my Quaker meeting house in New Jersey.

You would be amazed how many people have set up camp in the woods around here. In fact, a local cop suggested I do that during my first go-round with homelessness.

One of our county parks will let you pitch a tent on the beach for as little as five bucks a night, but they limit you to two weeks at a time.

I've attended two church buildings that had shower facilities on their premises. Or they might at least know where to refer you to locally. I'm so sorry this is happening to you. Sending you all the best wishes going forward.
