Amazon began banning the purchase of N95 and surgical masks by the general public on April 1, saying it would restrict the sale of those goods and other medical supplies to hospitals and government organizations combating the Covid-19 coronavirus.
In a notice posted on a forum for Amazon sellers, the company said the ban would also include facial shields, surgical gowns, surgical gloves, and large-volume sanitizers. Hospitals and governments interested in purchasing these items through Amazon need to fill out a form to qualify, and Amazon said it would eliminate the commission it normally takes from sellers who sell these items during this time to encourage our selling partners to make additional inventory of these products available at competitive prices to these customers with the greatest need.
The move is the latest drastic change Amazon has made to its business practices amid the global pandemic that has upended billions of lives and economies across the globe. Amazon has become a lifeline to essential goods during this time for millions of customers ordered to stay at home and those fearful of shopping in stores during the crisis.
In mid-March, faced with merchandise shortages in the United States and Europe due to the pandemic, Amazon instituted sweeping changes on which products it will store and ship from its warehouses, in a move it said was aimed at keeping essential items in stock and speeding up orders.

(23,065 posts)Lots of DIY books, no actual masks.
We have no handkerchiefs that are big enough to use for masks and no square scarves, so I ordered 4 extra large double ply bandanas. I will try to make the no sew version of masks using coffee filters inside for extra filtering and if that doesn't work, will just try the bandana over my nose/mouth and at least have some filtering. i have a very elderly cat who is very sick and needs to eat as much as possible so his body makes red blood cells and the food I've been feeding him was making him worse so i have to find new food he likes or he will die. That means I go to the store a couple of times a week since Chewy is out of a lot of their stock, including the one kind they have he likes - boo. I think (hope, pray) I've now found 2 kinds he likes and bought quite a few cans. Hopefully he'll continue to eat these and we can stock up and not have to go so often and eventually hope Chewy gets his kind back in stock and that will eliminate one travel requirement.
