Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsUp all night with five goats giving birth, all made it ok.
I had two of children with me learning what to do if necessary.
The kids are 10 and 12 years old.
They are learning to be farmers just like I did.
They have lost part of their childhood.
We will go fishing later so they can be kids again.
Talk to your kids and grandkids and make sure they are ok.
We are lucky to be here on the farm but the stress is still here.

(182,279 posts)I'm trying to get my kid to understand that she needs to just chill and relax. As bad as this is, this will probably never happen again. Relax. No more school work (she's worried about her grades - which are very good) so just play with the dog and chill.

(2,962 posts)They have time to play.
They like farming so it helps.

(13,400 posts)and hated the cold. We always got along real well, but I was never part of the crew that actually worked right with her. By all accounts, she was a lazy ass. It is astonishing to see some of her posts! I would never have believes it. Out there at zero dark thirty in the winter or whatever it takes. I would never have believed it.
I kind of chalk that up to the difference with some people working for someone else, or working when it's all their own money on the line and hopefully going into their pocket.
A buddy I went to school with was just like that. We worked at a grocery store together and he was the biggest screw-off on the crew. Several years later he ends up owning his own café and working like 17 hour days six days a week. WTF dude? You were probably making more per hour and had better benefits at the store. Same thing. Once it was all his money, he took it seriously.

(58,785 posts)Your very fortunate children live on a farm with you and each other. Wherever mom and dad are, everything's fine for them, including a rich childhood whose focus is currently at home and not lost at all, or less, just changed.

(4,496 posts)My first live birth began with me running into the house telling my grandma one of the goats had fallen and had a stick up their butt they were trying to push out LOL I always felt sorry for city kids who didn't know any country kids to straight out their twisted ideas about the birds and bees.
Congrats on the kids!! PLEASE post pics

(14,998 posts)She used to ride a friend's horses (we traded barn work and mucking for the riding). They bred their mare to their stallion (we didn't witness THAT part) and when she came due, they called us (around midnight, if I remember correctly) and I drove her over to witness the birth. Very cool experience for her. Plus the mare was, shall we say, intense and she wouldn't let anybody but my daughter get anywhere near her baby filly for several weeks.

(36,231 posts)and she had three goats on leashes. Training to be pack goats. Unfortunately it was one of the few days I forgot my camera. I could kick myself. Also someone in our neighborhood has two goats. I hear them in the summer when I have the windows and doors open and my husband has seen them.
Be safe.

Our two little Nigerians are a couple months old now, and just think they're all that and a bag of chips. Adam and Amy, out of Nancy and Rachel. They eat cookies now. In the backyard, and be sad when they have to go in with the rest of the group, because they've been a hoot.
And the mature hooligans, looking for cookies
