My sister got a gov. check today for $986.

No idea what this means. Was it net, did they take taxes out? I know it's income-related. Her husband is a retired federal employee and she's retired from a state job. I thought SS recipients were getting it by direct deposit. My husband and I are retired. Waiting to see what we get and how.

We will be using whatever we get to help our grandchildren who are out of work.

Heard about car dealers sending out "official" stimulus checks that can be used to buy a car. There will be more than a few scams. Going on. Sounds very fishy to me.

Not to horn in on nunnamybizniz, but I've gotten checks like that, that made me do a double-take. They looked very real, nearly identical to the tax refund checks. The other reason I'd love to know, is because if it is real, then I'm going to get my hopes up that these payments will be coming soon!

Thanx!

Or Vona S. Robinson, but there might be more than one authorized signature.

As long as it's not Trump's, which is an idea that was floated around to boost his popularity, I'm fine!

Electronic payments could be sent out next Thursday, the internal document said, but paper checks are set to be mailed out to Americans on a weekly rotation beginning later.

The plan set priority, starting April 24, for paper-check distribution to those with the lowest income — individual taxpayers making $10,000 or less.

Checks for those under the $20,000-or-less bracket are to be mailed a week later, on May 1, under the plan, followed by Americans earning $30,000 or less on May 8, and so on.

1) My local bank lobby is open by appointment only. If you can get inside a bank lobby, talk to the bank manager. Show him/her the check, and ask if the physical check is indeed a bonafide government check. They have ways of knowing.

2) If it is indeed a valid check, don't cash it or deposit it yet. Call the IRS (start there) and ask them what the hell the money is for.

3) If it is not an official government check, keep it, but do nothing with it.

4) Never cash any kind of check until you know exactly what it is for. Even a cashiers check.

She says "It says United States Treasury, signed by Nora Robinson"

and that's all I'm gonna get out of her. I don't really want to be the one to burst her bubble. Poor thing, she's got the handicap of being an orange-cult follower.

but I'm 99,9% sure it is not a stimulus check.

Could be anything...perhaps even an IRS error.

Bottom line is this...never cash or deposit a check until you know exactly what the proceeds are for.

and they can't have gotten any checks out from IRS yet, so I'd suggest she not cash that. Some scammers will send checks, when you cash then, they initially clear, and then they are found to be bogus so you are charged back for the money -- usually they ask you to send some to them, but still, this is most likely a scam. Be careful!

they would not spend the money until the check cleared.

I'm going to text her right now for an update.

EDIT to add: She says the money is sitting there in their bank account, there was no check stub saying what it was for, and now they agree with me that it's strange, but they're just going to wait and see.
