President Donald Trump has announced the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommends that Americans use non-medical, cloth face coverings to help prevent the spread of the virus.

"From recent studies we know that the transmission from individuals without symptoms is playing a more significant role in the spread of the virus than previously understood," Mr Trump said.

"With the masks, it's going to really be a voluntary thing," he emphasised. "It's voluntary, you do not have to do it. I don't think I'm going to be doing it."

He notes the CDC is not recommending the use of medical-grade masks, as those should go to health care workers.

As I just emailed my Dad, who I may not see for awhile since he's 79 and has some complicating conditions, the masks we can actually get and stuff MacGyvered out of normal cloth are worthless against virus particles and aerosol droplets. Not sure why they are advising this bit of theater -- oh wait.

They can also stop the wearer from spewing particulate, which helps others. So if everyone wears one, we're all spewing less particulate into the air and onto surfaces. The helps the public welfare.

This is theater. I am keeping my distance and limiting my exposure to other people. This mask thing is bullshit. It is theater calculated to make you think you are doing something useful when the truth is there is nothing useful we can do but sit and wait.

I said that unless you can get N95 masks, which you shouldn't because those need to be reserved for people dealing with heavy viral loads like health care professionals, masks do nothing. Both virus particles and aerosols will go right through a dust mask or regular piece of cloth. Pretending otherwise is distracting you from measures that do work like keeping distance, washing hands, and staying home.

If everyone wears one, as Dr. Fauci and the CDC advise, that's a significant decrease of particulate being spewed into the air, and thus a lesser change of contracting the virus.

Not rocket science, but I guess you know more than the scientists and doctors.

We have been told for OVER THIRTY YEARS that face masks which are not rated for medical use are worthless. We were told this same thing as recently as February. We have been told that using such masks creates a false sense of security and that it should not be done for numerous reasons, and now suddenly in the middle of an ongoing catastrophe we are told EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE.

I don't believe it. I don't believe anything that comes out of this administration, and I believe this reversal is more bullshit gaslighting and attempting to put lipstick on a shit pig. If you think that's being like Trump then you're welcome to your opinion. I respectfully disagree with you and will go with the guidance I have received for my entire life, not our sudden war with Eastasia which I don't remember from more than two days ago.
