They deserve some praise for sure ( from a humankind perspective). If you take a political hat off for a second (why not), the WHO was actually the entity who said it was not something other countries should worry about on Jan 23. Trump stopped flights in from China effective 2-2.
Been delving into this. IMHO, We've got to nail him on February forward except for dismantling the pandemic team who might have foreseen what was coming. Especially since they have out of context clips of Biden, Pelosi, and Sanders dissing the idea of a Chinese travel ban. They are also big time claiming China hid and lied about infections. So they know we will come at him.
Here's the time line...
On December 31 last year, China alerted WHO to several cases of unusual pneumonia in Wuhan, a port city of 11 million people in the central Hubei province. The virus was unknown.
Several of those infected worked at the city's Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which was shut down on January 1.
As health experts worked to identify the virus amid growing alarm, the number of infections exceeded 40.
On January 5, Chinese officials ruled out the possibility that this was a recurrence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus - an illness that originated in China and killed more than 770 people worldwide in 2002-2003.
On January 7, officials announced they had identified a new virus, according to the WHO. The novel virus was named 2019-nCoV and was identified as belonging to the coronavirus family, which includes SARS and the common cold.
Coronaviruses are common and spread through being in proximity to an infected person and inhaling droplets generated when they cough or sneeze, or touching a surface where these droplets land and then touching one's face or nose.

(17,862 posts)Also I watched the speech where he talked about xenophobia, and it was referring to the actions leading up to crisis and emphasizing that we can't be reactionary. If it was the speech in Iowa he didn't specifically bring up the travel restriction (which was not a ban as another poster pointed out - since Trump restricted Chinese nationals only there have been a half million coming from China that have entered the country).
It is also the President's job to sell his actions, and he did a very poor job of it (as always). Also I think we are too reactionary with everyone of his proposals. When he is right or can be close to being right, we need to acknowledge that.
Trump was saying there was no problem to at least the end of February (I posted the quotes for right before Fat Tuesday since Louisiana is taking heat for having Mardi Gras - they just made the mistake of listening to the man who should know more than anyone else in this country about what is going on.
Fat Tuesday was Feb. 25th. Here are Trump's statements immediately prior to that date: Feb. 23: We have it very much under control in this country. Trump in speaking to reporters.
Feb. 24: The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me! Trump in a tweet.

(42,770 posts)context but it fit the story our opposition is trying to portray...China lied about severity and Biden, Sanders and Pelosi didn't like the idea.
Makes me think for sure they know the period between Dec and Feb is quite iffy for Dingbat, so they are painting a false story.
Best to just ignore details and just show him golfing.

(42,770 posts)Trouble is, they got a little clip. It must be very very difficult to be a politician. To craft remarks and speeches to a kid this.
You are so right about how us ordinary citizens rely on those in power who are privy to important things to handle and keep us safe. When you have someone you don't trust it's absolutely scary.

(34,661 posts)the Chinese Government was harassing American and Canadian teachers who were hired by Chinese Corporate fat cats to teach their children English. Most left and went to Vietnam, because Hong Cong was in the middle of their Strike and besides,Vietnamese were willing to pay more money for English teachers than the Chinese. We heard about this bug in early September from one of those teachers. The Chinese Officials made it known, you talk your life will be hell.

There are zero first Amendment Rights in China,it is a monolithic Political System run by and for the Chinese Army.
When the final Tabulations of the victims is done, which will take years,we will know the true human toll in China as well as here in the USA.
