It's spreading in California - 8PM howling

It's something that appears to have started in my childhood home town of Mill Valley, California, but I heard it for the first time in my Podunk town in the Central Valley. I joined in with relish.

Mill Valley Howls For Health Care Workers Fighting Coronavirus

Inspired by coyotes, Mill Valley residents are howling nightly in support of health care workers and first responders battling COVID-19.

MILL VALLEY, CA — Some shut-ins around the world sing. Others clap. Mill Valley howls.

Inspired by coyotes, Mill Valley residents are howling nightly in support of health care workers and first responders battling the new coronavirus. The tribute takes place every night around 8 p.m.

In a YouTube video, the entire city seems to be howling in unison. Barking dogs and howling coyotes appear to join in the chorus of howls and shouts.

"Our sweet city ... howls for all those health care providers letting them know we are here for them," Brian Smith wrote on Twitter. "Can even hear the coyotes."

"Last night was the best ever," resident Nan Paget told the San Francisco Chronicle. "Someone added a saxophone solo."

"The Mill Valley 8 p.m. howl is the only thing getting me through this rough time," Jessie Scarsella wrote on Twitter.

Marin county here in the Bay Area has alsways been a special place and I feel it now more than ever.

We are on the other side of Mt Tam from Mill Valley in the San Anselmo Valley - it’s fantastic - all over people howl, our dog joins in and for about 10- 15 minutes all through the valley you hear it echoing. It is a source of letting out anguish and crying out to our neighbors and communicating in the most primal of ways. Sometimes it sounds with anguish and pain, other times with humor and even some trumpets being sounded.

By day and night there has also been lots of sounds of drumming from across the valley.

Somehow in our time of sheltering in place, we all connect and it feels so powerful and emotional.
