Luxury resorts face coronavirus crisis as the 1% flee cities for holiday hideaways

Luxury resorts face coronavirus crisis as the 1% flee cities for holiday hideaways

Ski towns and luxury retreats report rising number of cases amid concern hospitals could be overwhelmed by coronavirus patients

Link: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/04/rural-resort-towns-coronavirus-covid-19-holiday

Excerpts:
Resort towns favored by the rich and famous are facing a coronavirus crisis as the 1% have fled cities for their holiday hideaways. As the rich have rushed to escape to their luxury retreats, local officials are reporting a disproportionate rise in Covid-19 cases and getting increasingly angry and worried about cases overwhelming small local hospitals.

In Ketchum, Idaho, the nearest city to the luxurious Sun Valley ski resort, Mayor Neil Bradshaw warned that the region was not the a place for a “virus vacation”.

In last year’s ski season, Sun Valley had 426,500 skier days. For decades, it has been a hotspot for jet-setting celebrities and billionaires including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mark Zuckerberg, Marilyn Monroe and Clint Eastwood. As of Thursday, there were 351 confirmed cases in its county, which is home to only 22,000 people.

“We must discourage friends and visitors from coming to town,” Bradshaw wrote in a column for the Idaho Mountain Express. “For a town used to welcoming visitors, that is hard to do, but we must reduce the number of people visiting our area.”

COVID-19 knows no borders and is no respecter of privilege or wealth.

The coronavirus crisis has exposed the ugly truth about celebrity culture and capitalism
The rich and famous are desperate to prove we are all in this together – in fact, the outbreak has highlighted just how false that is

Then there is the billionaire David Geffen, who deleted Instagram after the incensed reaction to him posting pictures of his $590m (£480m) superyacht, on which he is self-isolating, with the caption “hope everyone is staying safe”. Faring slightly better on the social media front is Ivanka Trump, who has not yet sequestered herself on a superyacht. Instead she is selflessly educating the great unwashed by posting a video of her kids cleaning their hands with $39 Aesop soap. A real woman of the people.

They're disgusting. I hope more Americans understand that billionaires have amassed what they have due to tax breaks you and I will never see. Bill Gates, when interviewed about the presidential race was asked, if it comes down to Warren and Trump how would you vote. He would not answer the question directly.

They like their money a lot.

Waiting to happen. They'll only spread this virus more. Like Gyms, churches, and other places it will be rampant in. Those thinking wealth will protect them, or sending people back to work prematurely to protect their wealth is just another lose/ lose situation. watch out for trump . He will force people back way to early by threatening them soon, showing he could care less about the American people's health. He's only this concerned because he's losing money from this now, and his threats are coming , maybe to the Governors first , do this my way or else. trump only cares about trump, and the sooner everyone realizes that the better WE"ll be for it.

With 351 cases out of a population of 22,000, this extrapolates nationwide to >5.2 million cases.
That's WAY higher than the country is now.
This community is getting hammered by this.

I think the public simply does not know (or it has not sunk in) that people can be a carrier and spreader of this virus without showing symptoms for several days, or that a certain percentage can be asymptomatic for an even longer time.

Until most all of our people get that through their thick heads, we'll see more examples like this one in Idaho. The rich and famous are particularly known for severe denial issues.

If we had good leadership at the top, they would be spending time every day discussing this in our media, and insisting the mainstream media stress it relentlessly.

Have you seen any PSAs on TV or social media to this effect? I hardly watch TV so I wouldn't know.

PSA's on all channels, from the networks to Chicago based satellite like MeTV & WGN America. The local inserts on other major satellite networks are including them too. I've seen them on ESPN, AHC, MLB, the food channels...!
It's part of "Illinois All In". Public info initiative to get people to understand that we are the solution.

Enviro Guy needs to turn on his television before he starts complaining about the message not getting out.
One thing I have stopped watching is the daily White House press conference; also known as the "Daddy Needs Love" show. All he cares about is the ratings he's getting. He thinks he's running a reality TV show.
I'd like to see just one of the reporters call him out on his bullshit live on air. Argue with him and not back down. Make the Secret Service drag him out of the press room.
I bet Trump changes his "toon" when he or one of his kids get the virus.

351 confirmed cases out of a population of 22,000? The county in which I live has 3 confirmed cases and a population of 50,000.
