The authoritarianism virus

By GARRY KASPAROV

... After three years of President Trump’s constant lies and extreme political polarization in the United States, the only people who believe anything Trump says do so mainly to spite their political enemies ...

... Thousands of Americans are dead, the world’s greatest experts are available, and the president’s son-in-law is lecturing us based on what he read on Wikipedia and Facebook that morning. Now the U.S. Navy is firing captains for warning about the spread of COVID-19 on their ships ...

... Incompetence is deadly enough on its own, but malice and corruption are never far behind in this administration. Trump has been waging war on American institutions and looking for ways to enrich himself and his cronies ...

... It’s an election year and it’s hard to overestimate the White House’s ability to exploit the crisis to advantage, legally and otherwise. Funds and resources can be sent, or not sent, based on political preferences ...

... authoritarianism spreads pandemics. It appears that the reverse is also true, that pandemics spread authoritarianism ...

Kasparov was a Soviet/Russian chess grandmaster and former world chess champion--one of the great chessmasters of all time! (For that alone, he would have my respect, but since leaving Russia, he has been very outspoken about its authoritarian regime.)

I'm having a hard time understanding why anyone would still believe a single thing that comes out of Trump's mouth. And try as I might, I can't see what non-wealthy people possibly think they are getting out of Trump that has any value to their lives.

The closest I can come to an explanation is to remember how, in elementary school, sometimes the kids who got good grades were the same kids the bullies chose to victimize. And if you can't *be* the bully, at least you can have his bumper-sticker on your truck.
