An early trial shows hydroxychloroquine is NOT effective at treating Coronavirus, but the drug does have deadly side-effects for many patients.
Trump just told the entire country to take this.
Dont drink the Kool-Aid.

(20,863 posts)You need 30 subjects to conduct a study to begin with and many of them to compare and contrast the results.
The study in France had FIVE subjects, FIVE.

(19,825 posts)hydroxychloroquine has yet to approved by the FDA for use on Covid-19.
BTW, this drug was approved for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and my mom took it for couple of years. the side effect in her case was the creation of cataracts, so the doctor took her off of it.

(15,669 posts)In fact every time I go to the eye doctor, I say this is it? The doctor says not even close. Ugh! I want the procedure to get rid of my glasses. Only readers would be awesome.
Id rather not have the pain of arthritis.

(20,863 posts)He used different types of this drug and other malaria drugs for a number of years, including drinking tonic water. Tonic water used to contain a lot more quinine in it than it does today.
Therefore, it became ineffective for him and he decided the side-effects from it were worse than the malaria was!
It angers me something fierce that this drug, which has not been property tested for use in COVID-19, is being pushed by dump as it is not safe and those that need it for other medical conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and some forms of malaria cannot get it as it now stands.
It seems that some medical professionals are hoarding supplies of it thinking it works. I read yesterday that Nevada banned its use. However, I also read the the Gov. of Nevada now has a huge stock pile on hand! If this is true, rot in hell fucker!

(34,095 posts)for years and there are many DUers who do now for their AI diseases. I take chloroquine now. I do not think this is meant to treat, I was under the impression they were studying if it kept you from getting the worst of the conditions.
Hydroxychloroquine has side effects certainly but I was never told they were apt to kill just to keep checking your eyesight. I must have used it for somewhere between 5-10 years. Are they giving massive doses or what? Almost anything will kill you if you overdose on it daily.
This whole thing is ridiculous. Forget that Trump said to use it, he may have been told that by someone who knew what they were talking about and for some unknown and very odd reason he remembered that. It is not his place, of course, to recommend drug treatments. He probably thought the name of the drug sounded smart so he repeated it often enough to be able to say it and so he keeps on. It may be right but certainly not because of Trump.
Once medical treatments become the fodder of politicians and a fight breaks out real progress and knowledge is out the window because none of us ever wants to admit we were wrong. If this turns out to really be worth taking there now has to be a lot of embarrassed people. It never should have become political fodder.

(1,938 posts)Twitter maybe. A healthy percentage of people being admitted to hospital for Covid-19 were already taking that drug for their lupus. I will try to find the link and edit this post.

They use it for autoimmune diseases because its an immunosuppressant. I have to get labs every month because it drops my white count drastically. The only defense we have right now is our white cells, so naturally people who are taking it are in the high risk group and will end up getting CV19 more often and worse.

(14,046 posts)Even if it turns out to be useless for COVID, it has become a political drug because Trump "endorsed" it
For those who do not remember, laetrile was a quack cancer "cure" that became a popular cause with far-right politicians in the 1970s.

(17,419 posts)Testing in vitro (test tubes) showed great things. To my knowledge, studies in humans never resulted in these drugs being used for any of these illnesses.
About Hydroxychloroquine use for malaria per the CDC: " There are only a few places left in the world where hydroxychloroquine is still effective including parts of Central America and the Caribbean."
Is this a solution in search of a problem? Sales and use of this drug had declined.
All that said, if a controlled study shows it helps, I would be delighted.

(21,526 posts)he has been pushing this to the front of the line based on those flawed early studies and creating false confidence in people that the drug is a miracle cure, so no reason to stay home, right!
he needs to shut the fuck up and wait for the medical community to say what patients should be taking, not the other way around
