For me it's eating out and going to concerts and shows.
I am going to miss traveling, if this goes on.
You?

(2,565 posts)Yes, we can bingewatch but 1. The dogs make us get up to let them out and in all the time and 2. I love those boxes of Tuxedo Chocolate Covered Almonds. And then going out to dinner to debrief afterwards, with cooks and servers who do everything, and people I've never seen before in my life and will never see again! They're so interesting!
It's the little things.
I can't complain.
You couldn't be better situated for this than we are.
And yet? I am a first world person, with my teeny tiny first world not-even-problems.

(63,221 posts)Traveling, even short distances. Not being afraid. Being able to get the groceries and other household items that I need.

Just being able to run out to the store and pick up a few things for supper.
Plus going out to eat on occasion.

(14,966 posts)I'm not a morning person when it comes to exercise, and apparently neither are many of my neighbors. Because my neighborhood is f-ing crawling with runners, cyclists, and pedestrians in the afternoons. So many that I think it defeats the purpose of social distancing to go out and join them. Instead I have to drag my ass out of bed before sunrise if I want to feel like I'm exercising safely.

(51,590 posts)Since I am self quarantining I only go out once every 10 days and my car battery (only 3 years old) won't start due to not being used. I have to remember to go out and let the engine run. Good thing I bought one of those self jumping thingies for $25 a year ago.

(65,010 posts)Except for those units used by professionals (tow drivers, come to the car mechanics, etc.) which are 1800 cranking amps for 20 seconds, those jump starters will barely work to not at all on a very old battery.
They're meant for batteries at 80% or better of original capacity at 25C. Lower % in higher heat, worse if it's cold.
Why do I know these numbers. Because I bought an 800 amp, rechargeable and 2 springs ago my old battery wouldn't start car. It was sitting all winter in garage as I drove an old junker to work.
This thing not only wouldn't start the car, I didn't even get it turn the starter more than an eighth turn.
Useless.
If you left lights on, and you've got a good battery, very convenient.
Useless if your battery is getting near "better change it" time.

(51,590 posts)and my sister's car. We have almost new batteries and they start after one or two turns with this mini jumper. I got it since I rarely drive and AAA was taking too long when I needed them. Also,I could hardly ever find someone to let me use my jumper cables with their car's engine when I needed someone's help.

(65,010 posts)The other way I learned was trying be a good Sam. Guy need car jumped & I say I can help.
Bupkus! Guy had a rust bucket & battery was probably at least 15 years old.
While I was trying to do something nice, I looked like an idiot.
Fortunately, in my old winter time beater, I also had jumper cables, so I went to far end of lot and brought car over.
At least things worked out.

(51,590 posts)The battery mini jumper needs to be recharged and then we are off again...it has been over a week and doggie needs a reward. They closed the beaches and parks including the parking lots so I am going to our favorite "secret" park where I can let her off the leash and she can run for a few minutes since no one ever goes there. I hope I can still go there.

(494 posts)Attach it to your battery, plug it in,and leave the hood open (to prevent explosion due to the buildup of hydrogen gas) I use one on my rv for winter storage.

(54,369 posts)Today marks three weeks to the day that I have not left our little Rheinland town outside Düsseldorf.
Normally, in the space of three weeks, my work would have taken me to Brussels, Paris and Utrecht several times, and at least once to Zürich, Barcelona, Madrid, nad possibly München and/or Frankfurt.
It wouldn't do me any good to "escape," either, because all of those places are locked down tight, and the people I would normally be working with aren't in their offices.
At least I don't miss the variety of food as much. My wife is a master chef, and she has this uncanny ability to whip up a variety of four course meals in the space of half an hour that most people reserve space in fancy restaurants months in advance to get, and for $100 a head.
But, while I am not starving or eating unhealthily, and she is the best company in the world, this is a radical departure of my life's normal routine of the past 45 years, and I am NOT used to the change.

(2,900 posts)We dont vacation in the traditional sense of the word; however we do travel to several music festivals and dozens of live shows every year.
We consider our live music friends our family.
Its tough not seeing folks we generally only see a handful of times a year; however it will make our homecoming that much more meaningful I suppose.
For us; we miss our live music community.
Artists are doing an amazing job with these studio broadcast sessions & live-streams. It wont pay the bills; however they are reaching out to support their fan base during this difficult time; it is truly appreciated.

(65,010 posts)For one, golf. Wait all winter for good weather and now, I'm stuck being a member of an open to the public club, and nowhere to go!
Worst part is, IL had a golf course exemption because of the obvious opportunities to maintain distance. 17 course operators were reported in violation of the 4 simple rules in 4 days. In fact, 14 of the courses were found to be following NONE OF THEM.
So, Pritzker issued an order rescinding the exemption. 17 groups of scofflaws ruined it for the whole state.
The other is just going somewhere because I felt like it, with feeling guilty or worrying about how smart it was to go.

(50,269 posts)My Saturdays usually revolve around my great finds (or lack thereof). I miss the "regulars" I always bump into at them, too, especially an 80 something lady who never misses them. She's a frail, little thing and I hope she's okay.

(42,307 posts)We don't see the kids near enough (retirement was only a year or so away so we figured...)
But I get together with a group of lady friends for lunch every week and we are big with the hugs all around.
Just having my husband home now is a good feeling but, I swear, I'm getting agoraphobic. If I walk the dog and see other people out in the neighborhood, I start to panic.
Sending you a virtual hug. As Joe Biden says: We will get through this.

Also, going to the gym. What I wouldn't do to be able to go for a nice, long swim right now. Or, take a spin class. I miss all my spinning buddies. Wish I had a spin bike. I miss doing Zumba on a floating wood floor and with other people, too. It sucks doing it alone and on a carpeted floor.
I also miss going shopping without having to dress up like I'm about to walk into a goddamn surgical theater.

(25,183 posts)I moved from a community in NY that had a great beer bar, I'd go there about three or four times a week, just to hang out with the regulars, talk sports, and tell jokes. Now, in SC, I consoled myself with the Thirsty Thursday promotion at the local Beer Den at a Lowe's Foods supermarket. Now, that's gone.
I'm very fortunate, however, my lady is still putting up with me, and we have food in the house, and a screened-in back porch to hang out in so we're not just looking at the inside walls of the house. We're retired, and don't have to worry about getting through to an unemployment compensation office.

(7,220 posts)My 80lb pooch refuses to let me bathe her. She just "flattens out" and it's impossible to get her in the tub. So, dry dog shampoo it is.
But there are a lot of things I'm grateful for.
-I don't miss the fast pace my life had become, working full-time while trying to fit in personal appointments and grocery shopping
-I don't miss rushing around, stressing about being late or trying to find parking
-I especially don't miss business travel, or those god-awful in-person meetings they used to insist on.
-My cooking skills have really improved, and we are eating healthier than normal because even take-out food seems too risky.
-I haven't had time to garden for several years, and that's changed too.
