Mon Apr 6, 2020, 12:16 PM
Apr 2020

The GOP doesn't plan ahead, they just make use of any crisis, any tragedy, to line their "sweaty and enseamed" pockets. It matters not the suffering that they exacerbate (witness the profiteering in the selling of protective masks and gloves and antibacterial gel, the cancelling of a buyer's order so that the same product can be put back out for sale at a higher price).

GOP stands only for greed and power, power that ensures the door is open to satisfy higher levels of grosser and more despicable greed.

Tue Apr 7, 2020, 03:50 PM

The GOP is ever ready to profit from disasters and will, as you say, work to make a disaster worse when they can -- if it means profit to them.

The GOP didn't destroy the WTC (although conspiracy theories abound) but they profited mightily from it, using it to falsely justify a war against a nation not involved in 9/11 to increase the profits of private, right wing leaning and operated contracting companies, via non-competes, to fatten the already swollen purses of Dick Cheney, to enable Eric Prince to make millions of dollars via Blackwater's marauding mercenaries. They didn't cause Katrina, but they made sure one of their own would profit hugely by selling the Cheney/Bush administration those thousands of poisoned trailers that made so many people sick, not to mention the overpricing of reconstruction, etc.

I don't know if the GOP profited from the AIDS epidemic. But I do know that they sold their souls for their smug refusal to do anything to stop its deadly spread.

I'm a subscriber to Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" wherein she points out that big corporations, Republicans, and capitalists in general are ever ready to pounce on a chance to squeeze profit from others' suffering.

Of course and without question they will chip away and chip away at the social safety net to cause anger and anguish among the poor. There probably are profits to be gleaned by doing this, but I really think the prime motivator there is the infliction of more and more suffering, pain, and despair for its own sake on those unfortunate enough to be born without silver spoons in their mouths. I remember the so-called "moderate" Republican, Mitt Romney, referring to the poor sneeringly as "takers" and "useless eaters."

”People like you are still living in what we call the reality-based community. You believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality. That's not the way the world really works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you are studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors, and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.“ - Karl Rove

I really don't think he was asleep at the wheel earlier this year. I firmly believe he saw this as an opportunity to make a profit (while not thinking COVID-19 would become this deadly) and began setting up his new profit strategy. He needed time to put everything in place … public health be damned.

I also think he's been working out deals with commercial suppliers that involved funneling products in the national stockpile to them and splitting the profits.
