The Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly blasted the now ousted commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt as "stupid" in an address to the ship's crew Monday morning, in remarks obtained by CNN.

Modly told the crew that their former commander, Capt. Brett Crozier, was either "too naive or too stupid" to be in command or that he intentionally leaked to the media a memo in which he warned about coronavirus spreading aboard the aircraft carrier and urged action to save his sailors.

The acting secretary accused Crozier of committing a "betrayal" and creating a "big controversy" in Washington by disseminating the warning so widely.

"It was a betrayal. And I can tell you one other thing: because he did that he put it in the public's forum and it is now a big controversy in Washington, DC," Modly said, according to a transcript of remarks Modly made to the crew, copies of which have been provided to CNN by multiple Navy officials.

Dear lord. @TaskandPurpose has the audio of @SECNAV's speech. As soon as Modly says over the intercom that Crozier was "too naive or too stupid to be a commanding officer," you can hear someone, presumably a sailor, yell "what the fuck??"

once some people are drawn into Trump's circle of Hell, nothing they might have once done or believed seems to matter. Is it the proximity to power that destroys them? to hold any position of leadership. I've never heard of any military leader stooping to take cheap potshots at another officer in front of the troops.

He trying to cover up the huge mistake that the Navy made in punishing the ship's captain for his efforts to save his troops under the extraordinary conditions of fighting the corona virus onboard his ship.

He did not leak the letter he wrote pleading for help. Assuming he addressed copies up the chain of command that points to someone at the top of the food chain that wanted to retaliate against this man for exposing a significant problem.

I point a finger directly at any of Trump's bootlicking appointees, such as this incompetent Thomas Modly who seems to be carrying out Trump's well known vendetta against whistleblowers.

Doesn't really mean anything. It's just a starting point for evaluating someone's fitness for a job. My decidedly uninformed civilian opinion:
Crozier knew he was going to get fired. It was worth it to him to start a shitstorm on his way out, rather than quit in disgust without saying anything or go on as is without getting needed help and watching the consequences unfold and still not get help. Looks like Shitstorm Mission Accomplished. Well done.
