How many common carrier freight railroads are currently operating in the US?

You can cheat but you will know in your soul that you cheated

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_carrier_freight_railroads_in_the_United_States

A bit of a hint at least for the scope/size of some railroads

The Richmond Pacific Railroad (reporting mark RPRC) is a terminal railroad owned by the Levin-Richmond Terminal Corporation. The RPRC operates on 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of track in the shipping terminal and wharves at Richmond, California.

due, as you suggest, to 'terminal' and other short-haul railroads.

Many on the list have been acquired/merged with others.

That there are two or three private capital firms that own dozens of short line RR's, many of them originally being family businesses going back 150 years, but bought up by a bunch of suits in an office in Scarsdale or on the Lower East Side.

Short-lines that do the big boys cost-prohibitive work. Most have no CBA's. Non-union.

Passenger trains are because they carry people whose rights under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 might be violated if they were denied service, but freight has no such rights, to my knowledge.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
