It only takes one infected person in a small town to start a pandemic in that small town. This virus is spreading everywhere, It just takes it little bit longer to travel and spread in rural areas.

Death rates per capita are reportedly already much higher in some smaller hot spots than in cities.

(1,178 posts)Even further, many of them don't understand severity of the virus. They just seem to think if they do get it that they'll just have to go to their doctor and they'll get a prescription to treat it, or in a worse case scenario be admitted to their local hospital. These people will end up having to learn the hard way.

Further, most rural hospitals are glorified urgent care clinics. Anything serious gets transferred.

(64,963 posts)Illinois has 12,262. There's 4 times the people here and a giant metro area.
So, Iowa, very rural, is hardly immune.
Also, I read one county in iowa saw a 148% increase in cases in a day.

In our county, only 25% of us are Democrats, but we count, we care, and we are obeying the governor's directives.

(12,409 posts)While I do live in a blue state, the community/county I live in is very rural. And very red. The population here has more than doubled over the past 40 years or so. Mostly city people finding a piece of land and new lives. We have taken this very seriously. So far only one case found in my county, stores either closed or providing hand wipes, many people wearing face masks when I do go out. A neighboring county, San Miguel, is participating in a program to test all residents for CV so as to have data for the future.
Please do not make assumptions about other peoples than yourself, the world is much larger than you can imagine. I would add that the average education level of people living here is higher than any other city I have ever live in and I have lived in many from coast to coast.

(543 posts)I've always felt that the plains are far more conservative than the South. The coronavirus is now hitting the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles and western Kansas, just barely hitting the plains, but hitting nonetheless. In other words, now hitting the Orange Sociopath's base. Wonder how they are going to feel about the O.S. when the people they know -- and vote with -- begin to die?

(10,749 posts)Fine, let them congregate and spread the virus among themselves - backyard BBQs, church, beach, etc. And then let's see how they like their liberties infringed upon when they die.
Then I remind myself that they can and will, gleefully I suspect, infect others. And that tempers my attitude a bit.
But just a bit.

IOW, they seem about as worried as anyone else.
I live in a red county.
We locked down early, and lately everyone seems to be wearing masks.
