(19,382 posts)Even New York hasnt needed all they have. Governor Cuomo says they are good now.

(34,407 posts)recently got came from China, and borrowed from California, Oregon, and Washington. New York state has by no means peaked, and resources are absolutely still needed. Every state in these United States will need ventilators when their state peaks. My state is not expected to peak until April 18th. California is not expected to peak until mid-May.

Why do you think so many are being made? Where do you live, that your state will not need ventilators?

(34,407 posts)especially in Florida. Doomsday will come, hopefully not for you. Although, one persons doomsday is another persons opportunity.

(37,613 posts)They needed ventilators last year.
The question isn't whether they need them, but whether they currently have enough to meet their predicted needs.
Cuomo said he needed 30k ventilators (and at one point, 40k), with it being fairly clear that that was in addition to what they had. Projections are that they'll need 6k on account of COVID. It's not clear that they had that many unused before this, but the projections haven't been lowered *that* much since they needed 30k. Cuomo was looking at something like the worst case--what would happen fairly infrequently, and which would be obviously heading towards worst case not 3 weeks before peak when predictive ability is truly sucky but 3-4 days before peak when things are reasonably predictable. He also made it sound like it was a present need, and not a predicted need. I assume he didn't talk like that during actual planning meetings with staff, just when talking to reporters.
Now, NY got some ventilators, so it's likely they would have run short. They made cuts to their ICU beds in the last few years (perhaps not the wisest choice, but it probably seemed good to Cuomo and the legislature at the time--even hindsight isn't 20/20 these days). It's likely that they've over ordered, and the defense will be "better safe than sorry" and "who could have known?" Of course, there are the projections, but likely projections aren't really reliable. I guess.
