It looks like we will have anywhere from 10-20-million people filing for unemployment at the very least, that is, once they can get through to file. The food banks are already overwhelmed and there will be shortages to come as to how much food they can provide. This is worse than four-years of unemployment during the last recession. This may also exceed the levels of the Great Depression and now, people are less able to survive on their own.
The stimulus checks to individuals will be too little, too late and by the time many people get them, they will already be far behind in rent and necessities. The biggest bailout has been to the wealthy and corporations when you compare them and nothing is really being made clear about how American workers will be assisted.
We know that this is not going to go back to normal and that the bromides we are being tossed about getting America back to work soon are merely a means to quell dissent, anger and desperation. Yet, it is coming and in a short time. Hungry people and children who are on the verge of being homeless, (not to mention the impact on those already there) are going to feel this where it really hurts and how will they react as it drags on and little is done?
I am bracing for the inevitable here and not taking this lightly. The only thing that can avert the coming upset is swift and regular stimulus to individuals and small business in that order, rather than the huge imbalance of welfare for big business, etc. The thing is, I don't think that help will be coming and when people realize that they are on their own and have no means of support or livelihood now or in coming in the near future, that's when the proverbial feces hits the oscillating fan blades and it won't be pretty.
I am certain that we will not be going back to what we call normal after this.

As people begin to starve in the dark, the need for support for us all will become all too evident.
When peoples' children are hungry, grandma is freezing in the dark, and the creditors are hounding them, they won't care how big the bailout was for United Airlines or how many luxury hotels were spared from the chopping block. They'll want food and money and if they don't get it they'll go looking for blood.

I think the immediate relief check should be at least $5,000. Then, the checks should be $1,500 each person per month, for a minimum of 12 months. When people balk and say OMG!, how will we ever pay for this?, I say print some more money.
Edited just to say: No Sarcasm at all.

(54,770 posts)for the $500 Billion of corporations, it's more to keep the businesses viable than anything else, and as many people employed as possible. Sure some will get more than they deserve. But, payback time can come when Democrats are in control.
I hope to heck they work out the unemployment benefits payments. I know that some people are already getting benefits from posts right here. I think many more will have them within a week, that's probably faster than in the past when you had to prove your were looking for a job, etc.
Plus, the amount of money the government put in the Care/Stimulus Acts actually will provide some unemployed with more than they made working, and will greatly increase the percentage of working income.
I think what was enacted in the past week -- with a lot of push/threats from Democrats -- is pretty good. In fact, it's better than anything I would have expected before Democrats gained an edge in House.
I also believe more is coming. If people riot, it won't make it better.

(4,015 posts)We are not far enough into this abyss to be able to see just how much of an abyss it will be and how long it will last and for whom.
But it will get much much worse and for a whole lot more people.

(11,949 posts)Politicians follow the votes. As long as the constituents of republicans in safe districts were thriving they were fine with starving the underclass.
But the suffering now transcends party and geography.
And in November Americans will be presented with a choice. Elect those who always wanted a more FDR like society or those who are pretending. Im more confident than most we will choose wisely.
There era of small government is over.

(10,533 posts)Payments and interest are on hold until the end of September but what happens in October? Do pols really think that everyone is going to be back on their feet and able to make student loan payments to the government in addition to rent/mortgage and other necessities in six months? It's delusional and obscene.

Well, to me then, if he gets re-elected, then there will be a most dystopian political revolution being polished up and finalized. That sounds worst than any strong political, pot boiling over unrest that looks possible in the interim.
Thanks!
