Skunks have very poor eyesight, so if you remain still and quiet they might not even realize you're alive. Even if they do perceive you as a threat, Plan A is to flee; they've got one "round" in the chamber and once they spray they require a lot of time to build it back up, so that's strictly the Final Option. (The li'l ones can't fully spray until they're older but they can "poot" a bit.)

Here's a guy playing with an orphaned wild skunk, with full ability to spray, that he was looking after until it was old enough to return to the wild; you can see it "threaten" him by stomping (common skunk warning) and pointing its backside at him, but it's all play and he doesn't even cut him with those scary teeth.

I'm familiar with wombats, wallabies, echidnas but have little knowledge of skunks. Now I want one!

I remember frequently smelling skunk when I was growing up in upstate NY, but I had never actually seen one. They are charming little critters.
