(34,857 posts)Even if they stick to the talking point that he was calling the reaction by the Dems a hoax and not the virus itself, the optics are just horrible. He's between a rock and a hard place on it: trying to explain it just sounds terrible and yet, ignoring it cedes the entirety of the remark to his opposition.
If Trump had any humility, he could have easily walked it back by apologizing for his word choice and claiming he misspoke during an energetic rally in front of his supporters.
But Trump literally can't ever admit mistake. So, he doubles down.
A simple, "Look. I got a bit passionate in front of my supporters and didn't articulate my point well at all. I'm sorry for that. Of course I don't think the virus os a hoax. I only meant the Democrats politicizing the virus was like their impeachment hoax..."
Or some shit like that. Does it exonerate him? No. Does it kinda humanize him? Yes. And I think it would have defanged the attack a bit.
But Trump won't do that and right now, it's too late if he did. So, he'll keep claiming this or that and all the while, the optics will look horrible for him.
Biden's team should play that on loop from now to November.
