Not long after the COVID-19 pandemic began, hopes for a vaccine were raised. Even US president, Donald Trump, a former vaccine skeptic, demanded a coronavirus vaccine, saying: Do me a favor, speed it up, speed it up.
So where does that leave the anti-vaxxers those who are critical or oppose vaccination. Will they now be quiet in the face of a real-life reminder of a time before vaccines controlled many diseases?
During a pandemic, the position of those who oppose vaccination is often voiced, even if a vaccine is not yet available.
Some celebrities and high-profile personalities have also spoken out about their unwillingness to have a vaccine. The British rapper MIA, for example, attracted controversy for her tweet: If I have to choose the vaccine or chip Im gonna choose death. YALA..
MIA experienced a significant backlash from many followers who disagreed with her views. Indeed, in general, the heightened stakes of a very present disease threat may lead to a stronger countering by those who are in support of vaccination.

(43,049 posts)They can blow all the smoke they want about flu and measles shots but they never lived through polio or cholera epidemics.
Any of them ever met a smallpox or tuberculosis sufferer?

(6,513 posts)They STILL think that measles mumps and rubella are no big deal. That vaccines cause
autism, (it doesnt).
New research shows that measles are especially dangerous to ANYone that catches them.
Measles breaks the code of the system (no recovery) and then resets the immune
system with grave outcomes; Higher rates of cancer and other life threatening diseases.
Anti Vaccine believers is Darwinism at its finest.
My gut punch is all the children who will suffer.

(3,364 posts)I see a lot of anti-vaxxers in some facebook groups. They are extremely vocal against any kind of vaccine for coronavirus. A good bunch of them peddle conspiracy theories about how this is all orchestrated to create a new vaccine an impose more forced injections.....chips.....5G....blah blah blah.

(3,364 posts)....at how many there are in my area. I have joined a bunch of local mom groups on Facebook in recent months mainly to talk about school, local activities, camps, good local coupons, etc. I've learned that there are more anti-vaxx than I initially thought in my community. I also learned why I see a few cars with "Q" stickers around here.

(5,629 posts)They comment on news threads with conspiracy theories and bullshit regarding the coming vaccine and its use to control and track the masses.
They are crazy. No amount of evidence will sway their thinking.
Sure a few of them might change their tune, but from the few anti-vaxxers I know, their beliefs are steadfast.
I used to run a trading card game league and we got all kinds of people including anti-vaxxers coming to play and I got a chance to talk to them and see what was up with their views. Smart people, except they firmly believed that vaccinations were used to control and mark people (and spread autism).

(10,811 posts)It's well overdue.
This nonsense is just another link in the anti-intellectual sentiment that's been allowed to run wild through the country with injurious effect. One of the greatest developments in public health has been vaccination for a variety of deadly diseases, many of which killed children before they reached adulthood.
Anyone who has a living memory of polio, for instance, gets the point of vaccination. My uncle spent 14 months in an Iron Lung after which he was taught to breathe using his diaphragm. He was one of the lucky few who still had 12% lung capacity after the disease ravaged his body.
There should be no coddling of fringe-believers, particularly when the so-called 'belief' impacts the public health system. It's simply selfish and stupid; it should be called out for what it is.
Enough already! Let the pushback begin.
